Always thought the English national anthem was

Land of Hope and Glory

If it isn’t then perhaps it should/could be.

Better to stay silent and be thought a fool than open your mouth and remove all doubt

This would be nice for England, especially as most of the lyrics are from the point of view of someone stuck in America who can't wait to get back:

And for Scotland it can only be:

Strictly speaking, God Save The King is a royal anthem, not a national anthem.

Apart from being a woeful piece of music, it's been redundant since it was 'needed' to demonstrate loyalty to the Hanoverian Succession.

Dreadfully outdated imperialistic twaddle.

Elgar hated the words set to his music.

A.C. Benson who wrote the words was also not fond of jingoism, and in 1914 said that war should be as outmoded as duelling.

I played the latter as the last song at both my dad and mum's funerals.

As well as being very moving, it is particularly apt for exiled Scots as my parents were, and as Dougie MacLean was when he wrote it.

"Caledonia you're calling me and now I'm going home"
