KM compensation hurdle.... 17:02 - Jun 9 with 1067 viewsMarshalls_Mullet

One thing to remember, is that Silva left at the end of his contract. So Fulham are in a situation where they havent had any huge severance costs to pay their former manager.

That will soften the blow of having to pay for a new manager.

And the fact Silva had initially agreed to a new £8mill contract.

I know they will still have to pay KM a big wage as well as the compo but do have money to chuck at it it seems.

Yeah, suspect they will save a few quid on KM's salary.

I shall be jolly upset if we move the goalposts and agree to a lower fee if McKenna pushes for the move.

£8M remains very little for an established PL team. If indeed KM is who they want. As you say, nothing to pay Silva.

Why would we? That's what contracts are for.

I keep reading about this £8m b0ll0cks

Chicken feed to these Premier League clubs

If they want something they go and buy it regardless of whether you're Fulham , Man Utd or Arsenal . Any established club would see if they think it's a good fit they'll pay for it

I seem to recall our captain was allowed to leave for free to pursue a career away from these shores a number of months back, fee waived as a thank you.
I sincerely hope your question/statement rings true in the case of Mr.McKenna

Seemingly not when it comes to managers.

This has been discussed before and on the surface it is true but it has a lot more stark financial consequences than a transfer fee.
It has to be paid in one lump and cannot be amortized.
It is a dead loss effectively as managers are not really traded like players.
It surely comes with a huge contract for the manager who could then be sacked a few months later, again, unlike players they are not moved around the squads it shipped out on loan.

It's still chicken feed broadly but not as simple as all that in reality.

Or, he goes there and they slap a £12m clause in his deal.
He takes them into Europe and becomes the main target for a number of the big clubs.
That £8m is sorted and a few pounds in the back pocket

It's not b0ll0cks - the manager costs have a disproportionate impact on what a club can spend on players under SCR (because of how it's recognised, and the immediate impact on this year's accounts).

Now, they may still choose to make that decision and invest in what they see as the right manager for them, and sacrifice a big chunk of what could have been available for player acquisition, but it's a misunderstanding of the financial rules to say it's 'chicken feed'. It's far from that.

Yup, it's the first year accounting equivalent to signing a player for £20M and paying them £80k a week over a 5 year contract (Fee amortised over 5 years so £4M per year)

It is certainly not the peanuts being described.

On the flip side, if he does go, that gets added to our transfer kitty.

I put a little detail in that here :

Something I don't understand about McKenna possibly going to Fulham by SuffolkPunchFC 2 Jun 23:20
The player is always an asset to some extent, even those that are not resold for a profit. And from a bookkeeping perspective, the value will be reduced each year of the contract. So a player bought for £8M on a 4 year contract can be sold for £6M after 2 years, and that is a positive £2M to that year’s accounts.

The injury risk is also likely well mitigated against with insurance.

None of this is applicable to a manager.

It’s all the subtle details of how club’s accounts and financial compliance is measured.

Last year Fulham had £194.5M revenue with £166.5M staff costs - exactly on the new 85% ratio. £8M for manager contract buyout would have pushed them to 90%, moving compliance from Green to Amber, requiring a reduction in the following year or two. That £8 paid out to bring a manager would probably equate to not being able the buy a £20M player on £65k/wk - to a decent signing.

Edited : to adjust the numbers, as I'd overegged the player equivalence.

Sure, of course that could happen. How often does that happen with managers? How disposable are managers compared to players when things don't go perfectly?

It's a big financial risk at pretty long odds. They may want to and see it as a risk worth taking, but it's a bigger risk than people on here are suggesting with 'peanuts' comments.
