It's been a few years since I've travelled there for a game, and I remember it always used to be poky and ramshackle in the 90s, but they've obviously done a bit of work on it since then.
Just looking around the outside it's such a jumbled mix of odd bits jutting out, that tiny side stand that you could pole vault up on top of, curves clashing with straight and sloped lines, that awful juxtaposition of red brick, tinny cladding and yellow and green plastic bits. Yuck!
It's clearly cleaner than it was, but it's just such a tacky looking little hole, is it not? |  |

It's four traditional, square, solid, decent sized stands (Cobbold marginal, obviously).
She has a certain elegance, n'est ce-pas?

Not so sure. Think most away fans rather like PR - traditional stadium, good atmosphere, in Town where they should be! etc etc |  |

I think you are underestimating how grand, large and traditional the pioneer stand is, and how it looms beautifully over the pitch. It is the first thing an away day fan will note when they go up the steps to their seat [Post edited 2 Sep 23:16]

Nice and visible from the station. Kept clean and tidy and with good reference to history around it. I love our ground.
As for Carrow Road, it fits in very well with the Big Yellow Storage centre across the road from it. Whilst it is convenient for the station, I doubt it is at all impressive or even especially noticeable from the railway. |  |

Being completely fair about this and putting aside rivalry both Portman Road and Carrow Road are decent, traditional stadiums, with a good history in the town centre. There are far far worse than Carrow out there, ie Brightons Amex a soulless bowl in the middle of nowhere, Mk Dons in a retail park, or the likes of Kenilworth Road which although characterful is completely old and run down. I believe that away fans enjoy trips to both Ipswich and Norwich as proper away days (long distance to travel aside) |  |

I was pretty impressed with the pipped in atmosphere on my first visit there,crowd noise etc.
Joke of a place.

About a year ago I read an article from a chap who had been to all 92 football stadiums/grounds. He had ranked them for atmosphere and impression they gave.
He ranked Portman Road second behind Fratton Park.
He was not a fan of, as he said, "Souless bowls" but preffered old fashioned "Grounds". |  | | |

I haven’t been to Fratton Park for many years now, but I thought at the time it was a right old dump. But all the better for it. Intimidating as hell, great atmosphere. Just as a ground should be.
Of the old grounds now gone, thinking of the south coast Southampton’s was unique. Two decent sized stands right up against the touch line, a triangular affair at one end and a little one (known as the Chocolate Boxes) at the other. Peculiar but great. The old Goldstone? All broken bricks, rubble, barbed wire and decay.
Leicester’s was two grounds in one. Double decker end stand, decent if decrepit main stand and two tiny ones. Highfield Rd was ok. Open, always cold and we always got a result there. Always liked the Hawthorns. Glad it’s still there. Villa Park and Anfield too.
Of the big lost grounds, White Hart Lane was a favourite. A beautiful ground and more intimate than the very grand Highbury.
Hated West Ham’s. Ugly all day, but you knew where you were and it was right against the pitch.
Norwich’s sht pit is actually ok, but again it’s a very long time since I’ve been there. Slightly odd with those two bigger end stands.
But at the end of the day, Portman Rd was and is home. Since I first laid eyes on it the stadium has changed out of all recognition and will continue to do so. But to me it still has that same feel and it’s almost as if it gets more atmospheric as old grounds disappear.

Love that Portman road has character. The visuals from train station on a dark night are great.
Having room for the fanzine attached to west stand is brilliant for families (I assume they will put down a proper surface over time)
Would love more leg room in west stand as it's awful for us 6 footers.
One upgrade would be the station, albeit nothing to do with the club. The entrance/exit is totally inadequate for loaded trains. Far too cramped and could be easily remodeled for more room. |  | | |

As a long term fan of ITFC who stood halfway up the old North Stand PR is a million miles away from that. I even remember the chicken run and the days when a capacity crowd wasn't 30,000 it was how many you could cram in and just before a game rows of supporters would be took around the edge of the pitch and seated on the grass.
Obviously there are areas that need and will be sorted as with the Cobbold which is some 55 years old now.
PR is without doubt in an excellent position due to the railway being so close and car parking in the area.
It has been said that the Cobbold may be as late as 2030 as the West stand will have to be developed and also the car park built adjacent to what will be the new Cobbold.
It really goes to show how different our American owners are compared to those at Carrot Road. |  | | |

Anyway 'pig ugly little dump' is a bit on the harsh side but it really doesn't feel like much. I think one of its issues is that it seems to be of the same architectural language as the nearby Morrisons, Big Yellow Storage and leisure centre, and it's right next to a block of flats that rises above it. So it just kind of fits in that part of the city and looks like any other building there; there's no real presence, it doesn't impose itself on you, it might as well be another retail unit. | | | |

Yes, 'pig ugly little dump' is a bit tongue in cheek and on the harsh side, I know.
What struck me about it was that it was architecturally such a jumbled mess, and the finish (red brick/cladding/yellow and green splodges) just looks really cheap and tacky. The tiny side stand just looks wrong.
Aside from that it is clean, and has a (very little) bit of character compared to a modern bowl, I suppose. I think your characterisation of fitting in with the retail units is bang on, actually. | |
