Very unhappy with the failure to land a center back....... 12:51 - Sep 1 with 12744 viewsGeefunk

think both ME and MM are to blame for this.

However it really shows that ME has no ambition for ITFC at all. After the start we have had and the positive signs, he clearly has no belief in us achieving anything this season because he hasn't authorised any additional funds..........

Depressing and love the blind optimism of those that think things are fine because we are second. Are any of you older than 12 ?

Firstly, well done for the childish insult (ironic really) aimed at anyone who has a slightly different point of view to your own.
Secondly, in what way was a lack of funds the reason behind us failing to land our target because another club weren't willing to release him due to a late hitch?

Clearly Evans did authorise funds, because we had Goldson at the club to do a medical and sign on loan (which would have cost a fee and wages), plus making enquiries about Shackell and Hobbs (neither of whom would have been free). On top of which we did sign the lad from Everton (fee and wages).

Plus we are second in the table, 12 points in the bank, more than a win ahead of everyone outside the top six (two in front of the whole bottom half of the table). We have a decent head start.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

Indeed, in this instance, funds weren't the issue. Would have been significant outlay in terms of Goldson's wages, equivalent to one of our top earners.

Correct so it'll be interesting hear what Mick has to say about leaving it so late!

I'd argue Phil that makes it even more disappointing the fact we didn't get anyone of note in. We can't entice players MM wants, as Ipswich Town isn't an attractive option? Is that the real problem?

Erm - the player we wanted was at the Club and all ready to sign. So how do you figure that out?

I don't think it's that. From Phil's report, the reasons for not coming were all from the other clubs (lack of replacement, not wanting the player to go out on loan) or, in the case of Shackell, fitness. Goldson came here for a medical, so can't have been too disinclined.

Short of paying a huge fee and wages to steal someone else's first choice CB, how many worthwhile options did Ipswich actually have?

I'm talking about plan b, c, d, e etc.... Seems like there was a solitary egg in one basket and that deal didn't get over the line due to his parent club. Any contingency plans in place?

Correct so it'll be interesting hear what Mick has to say about leaving it so late!

The leaving it so late was because there was a chain of transfers which needed to all happen to get the man we wanted. It was a last minute change of mind by the Belgian club (due to an injury!) which scuppered what looked like a nailed-on deal. Out of our hands on that one.

A club of Ipswich's status can't exactly line up a series of deals with the proviso it'll only go ahead if our first choice doesn't come. We're not that much of an attractive prospect that players (let alone teams) will hang around like lovesick teenagers just as an option in case our primary transfer should fall through.

In the final afternoon of a window, you're either making overinflated bids against other clubs, or taking those nobody else wants.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

Of course there are literally hundreds of fit, top champsiohip centre halves just twiddling their thumbs outside the job centre, we just didn't get round to asking any of them if they fancied a contract for a couple of months....

Football transfers are much like house buying. There is a chain involved with clubs dependant on other clubs getting their business done and as in this case if one part of that chain is broken it scuppers everything.

You people, who really seem to hate ITFC for some reason, can't blame this at their door I'm afraid, however hard you try to spin it.

We do actually have a number of centre backs. No one could have foretold that three of them would get injured at the same time.

Added to the fact fit, high level, championship centre halves in our budget are rarer than hens teeth.

Yes understand that Archer, but it looks like we were just hoping that the Brighton signing would go through with no problems - need to have serious alternatives. Issues their end and then its a rush to get someone in before 11pm. I'm sure even Phil and Gav weren't expecting Connolly to sign, it was so right field!

LOL

He was in the door. An injury to a player at Club brugge stopped the other centre back going to Brighton and then Brighton therefore couldn't let us have Goldson.
