One of my best mates from sixth form did just that when he was 18.
Had a year out of studying and went to visit his uncle out there. Stayed for a few months, learnt to scuba dive and then took the instructor's exams and a few months became several years.
He then moved to work for Marriot Hotels, and then also had postings in France (Euro Disney) and Thailand before coming back to Ipswich.
Couple of years later, his old boss called him up and offered him a job back out there and off he went again. That was nearly 15 years ago and he's now married and has a couple of kids and loves his life out there.
The only things he says he misses are proper grass and seasons throughout the year - every day is 25 - 30 deg C and sunny (unless a storm comes in). |  |

Depends on the island.... the island my mate is on struck oil in the 70s and as a result, there is hardly any unemployment and little poverty.
His uncle went out there as part of a scheme to attract certain professions to their economy (he's an optician).
That said, I have also been to other part of the Caribbean and there are most certainly parts you shouldn't go to. [Post edited 12 Feb 2018 15:00]

There are usually ex-pat communities wherever you go in the world, as for pace of life... what's so fast paced in London that can't be lived without and adapting to a different "world"?

I worked on cruise ships and I got to see Nassau one day a week for nearly a year. Always enjoyed the place for its beaches, a couple of decent bars, the amazing casino and great golf but to be honest that was about it. We were always warned of the dangers especially as one crew member on another ship was shot dead for not handing over her money when robbed.
This was about 10 years ago so it may have changed. If unsure I would recommend you go spend a week there on holiday. Travelling is great and I would always recommend it but personally there are a lot of other countries I would prefer to live in. |  | | |

Im currently living in Peru and have been here with my wife for just over 2 years, and came here after living in London all my adult life via a one year stint in Spain.
Id say living abroad is one of the best things you can do with your life so go for it.
There are some positives and negative aspects of living abroad though, which you should consider
for example here in South America it is a lot harder to travel than it is in Europe, but then we have great weather pretty much all year round.
The cost of living is a lot lower, but you miss out on a lot of global cultural entertainment that London has - football, concerts, etc ; of course there is a Peruvian football league but it cant substitute going to a championship or premier league game - that said abroad most satellite/cable packages are cheaper than the UK and you'll get access to all Saturday 3pm games.
Then there is food - this country has some of the best food in the world and I love that Ive had the opportunity to experience it and continue to taste it, but you will find yourself missing some UK comforts, some things like British tea bags are hard for me to get here so I have to stock up when I come home to visit, that said the Caribbean has more links to the UK than here so you might find more British products in the supermarkets.
All in all, go for it - even if it doesn't work out in the long term you'll be enriched by it experience wise.

Do it for a couple of years then you'll know.
I lived in Bermuda as a kid and loved it, but after 5 years my parents were a bit bored of it. Having been back since as an adult it's got much easier to access the rest of the world through flights (head off for a weekend in Atlanta or Miami or Chicago/New York if you want a break), and the internet etc. but still felt a bit limited unless you make an interest out there your new passion in life.
They used to call the feeling of needing to get off the island "Rock Fever". |  |

Living on an island, you do have to adapt your way of life. You'll find yourself doing more stuff (sports) rather than spectating. You will need to break into social circles that are very established, but nonetheless welcoming. Getting off the island will help a lot - Miami isn't far, so plan to go every couple of months. a
And get a place big enough to have guests. You'll find that all your friends and family will want to visit! | | | |

You've hit on one of my dreads...being sociable at 44. Feel like I've made all the mates I need...haha...but I really see your point and will try.
And as another has mentioned we'll definitely seek to go to USA and other places close by to mix it up.

One of my best mates worked in Bermuda for a few years. He was single and I kicked the backside out of visiting and crashing on his sofa.
Do it. Don't think. Do it.
He did travel to mainland USA every 6 weeks or so just to get avoid island fever.
I was offered a job with a private bank when I was there but had just got custody of my boys and felt I couldn't go. I do regret it as they would have loved a few years there. Scuba diving, warm weather.
