Why is East Anglia A Rugby outpost? 01:52 - Sep 1 with 6279 viewsquirkie

I'm from the West Country, how I come to support Ipswich is a long story but I'm the black sheep of the family as I mainly follow "Soccer" instead of proper football "Rugger", it's a West Country thing.

Now my question for you lot living in East Anglia is why in a rural area, where I'm making an assumption people are a bit more "manly", is Rugby not more popular.

I'll be honest down here [it's considered] not for real men.

Now East Anglia must be quite rural, only Nodge and Ipswich major towns, so lots of burely men about, so why has Rugby not caught on really in your region. Could you imagine an Ipswich rugby team in the Premeriship alongside Saracens, Bath and Leicester?

Suffolk is littered, littered with rugby clubs and rugby fans.

Your OP was daft as feck.

Only Norwich and Ipswich as major towns? Somebody best call Cambridge and let them know...

And no. Please don't use the term poofter. It's offensive.

It's the same with cricket OP.

Both games are played extensively at amateur level, but never provide teams to compete very highly on a national basis.

Neither Norfolk nor Suffolk have ever played in the County Championship and the same applies to Devon and Cornwall. I think they have provided the occasional England player because cricket is played in schools. Not so much rugby .... well my grammar school was a football school at least where rugby was an alien game that few understood.

Football was a bit of a late starter too.

Perhaps it's a population thing, especially a population spread in the earlier days.

Well if people in the West Country are still using the word poofters that tells you all you need to know. I've always found that part of the Country a bit backward, stuck in the 1800s.

Questionable whether Cambridge should be included in East Anglia. Anciently, it was pretty much bounded by the Stour, the Devil's Dyke and the Fens.

Agreed on the second part.

Can you remove the "manly" comment too please. Or do several million women playing rugby worldwide not count?

The OP is quite possibly the stupidest "non-trolling" post I've seen on here in 20 years.

But didn't you know that "real men" only live in rural areas and "softies" only in towns & cities?!

East Anglia as a whole is a wasteland if you want to see top level Rugby or Cricket. That includes Suffolk, Norfolk and Cambridgeshire. I don't consider Northamptonshire or Chelmsford (Essex south of Colchester) in East Anglia.

"Softies" doesn't apply to northern towns and cities.

Sometimes, when all the play acting and obscene money in football depresses me, I think I'll maybe give rugby a go.

And then I watch a match...

I've run the devil's dyke. It's a monster and really exposed to the elements.

I'd say Cambridge is East Anglia and it's a thriving, cosmopolitan city.

I know that was then, but it could be again..

Former neighbours' son played for Newcastle Falcons, built like the proverbial outhouse, still had to retire with neck injury - told that if he got similar tackle again he'd be dead!
