A young Dutch inventor came up with the idea.

The only thing we discharge into the sea is food waste. We keep, and segregate, all our garbage and land it ashore to an approved contractor.

I'm not sure that shipping is to blame for the Pacific Garbage patch. I read somewhere, can't remember where, that most of the crap floating in the Pacific actually got there from a handful of Rivers, five of them I think. Basically people chuck cr@p in the rivers, the rivers float it out to sea.

As has been said, shipping isn't the issue with regards to plastics.

Have they put measures in place to stop invasive species migration via ballast tanks? Not seen anything on that for a few years.
