Only downside is it is in Birmingham - pretty amazing burgerage though.

LL - decent curry house in Luton that you can recommend? Something like the Hen and Chicken would be perfect.

Z did say it was good.

The best chip shop I've ever been to was in Brum, and also the nicest Chinese (Szechuan) was there.

Just need a reason to go to Birmingham now, I guess.

Ah Luton, the place of my birth.

Unfortunately not but I can ask my main man Rajinder and get back to you.

By the way, I went into Hen and Chickens twice the other week, blimey, they haven't half put the prices up!

Next time you are up there go to The New Soho Tavern, I think it's a lot better - but it's in the middle of nowhere.

I think Burger and Beyond still edges it.

Mind you, and a note to all. The chilli fries at the Birmingham place were quite remarkable - almost a meal on their own. I was expecting fries with some cajun powder sprinkled on but in fact they were fries with chili mince and fresh chillies

Meatliquor chilli cheese fries are great as well, they use the (brilliant) burger meat in the chilli.

You rate Meat Liquor? I had it once and thought I'd be fecking robbed. Nearly pitch black eating in there, no atmosphere, massively expensive and badly cooked food. Would never go back.

Although if mine was just a one-off bad experience I'll give it another go.

Let's be honest here, the UK can try as hard as they like to emulate a Burger / BBQ eatery - but it'll always be a poor man's Stateside version.

BBQ in general, fair enough.

Not sure I agree on burgers.

Now look here man.

Ignore everything I say in future if you so desire but listen to this.

Go to either

Hen and Chickens Pub(Constitution Hill)
New Soho Tavern pub

Both are Indian run pubs with unbelievable food. Soho Tavern is further away but a bit better - both great though.

Wherever you go make sure you get a mixed grill

Both eateries on both sides of the Pond try to be clever by using Brioch buns.
The U.K. does it to copy the Americans. An abomination in the hamburger world.

Barring that, the USA win hands-down on both fronts.

What sort of bun would you use?

Brioche is the way to go.

You've been brainwashed.

A Brioche bun is too sweet, it's considered a breakfast item. It's also too small & flimsy. You need a neutral flavoured bun that encompasses the entire burger.

I tried an 'authentic' Philly Cheesesteak sandwich from some UK vendor.
They used a brioche roll. Having lived in Philly for 3yrs, they would laugh you out of town for suggesting that eggy thing be used as a bun. Then they'd cut you good.

Personally I prefer a brioche bun, nothing to do with brainwashing.

Nothing worse than an oversized bun either.
