Maybe the third tier is now our level. Many fans think we have a right 07:46 - Dec 3 with 9850 viewsOxford_Blue

to be in the top six or in the Premiership and our former success (now at least 37 years ago) is like millstone.

Fact is, if the fans don’t support the club - and 13,000 on Wednesday was very poor - the owner won’t make money available to buy players and the players aren’t good enough, the truth is we deserve to be in the third tier.

There isn't one part of that post that makes any sense at all. Good work.

I don't think many fans there on Saturday think we should be in the premier league. It is kind of now without saying it, understood we will go down and that is what has galvanised the fan base oddly enough (Note, I only go to away games, so this is based on away games only).

On Saturday we sung for longer and supported the team harder than we have done for ages.

Gone are the sarcastic chants and mumbles and now we are a more unified fan base supporting the team, we as fans are showing a huge amount support to this team right now.

I am sure we will take big numbers to Stoke and make a decent noise from kick off and if we do go down, we will go down in good spirits and with a support we can be proud of knowing we backed the team the to end.

Not really, there is no such league as the Premiership.

Good point, it is all the fans' fault really isn't it.

Well, to be fair, he has a good point.

If the players (who are people) turned up, we might win a game.

Tho it is quite possibly true that if more people had gone to PR over the last decade, we might not have had Waghorn enticed away by wages which are unaffordable for us, so the odd mistake from the goalkeeper didn't matter so much.

Ipswich Town only has two really significant income streams apart from player sales: Matchday income (inc. season tickets and catering) and input from the owner. The input from sponsorship and PL "solidarity" payments is much smaller. The lower the former is, the more it dilutes the effectiveness of the second.

Given the size of even pared down wagebills in the modern Championship, if the ticket sales are covering less than one third of that (e.g. in 2016-17 ITFC gate receipts were £5.13m, wages £17.78m), then there is a massive shortfall to be made up before we can even begin to think of spending extra on new signings.

The more people in through the gate, the more money there is likely to be for transfers (and keeping hold of the players we've got).

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

Ipswich also has a remarkably dispersed fanbase. Lots of people born or raised in Suffolk have since moved away. Or people with no direct connection to the area fell in love with the club in the glory years. The town itself is not that large.

Some people travel huge distances to Portman Road most fortnights. But the expense, traffic/rail disruption and winter weather will impact even on those just coming from the far corners of the county.

Plus the football has been somewhat rubbish and the chances of seing a win rather low.

With the squad and the money we have we will struggle in League 1, I am now expecting PL to walk before Christmas anybody know the odds on Town not winning another match this year I think it will be a safe bet.

Fans & supporterrs have little say. It is down to what the Owner feels he can afford or is willing to invest in a small town, low wage area, football team.
What can we do?
Transfer fees in the current league are now bordering on stupid
To stay up how much will it cost, will be his thinking

When have I backed him?

It’s all well and good calling someone a moron but it might help if you did a better job of providing evidence.

I have consistently responded to “Evans Out” posts by pointing out that as Evans owns the club and underwrites the losses, the only way for him to sell is for someone else to be prepared to take on that exposure. I have also argued that Evans appointed a young manager from the lower leagues which is what many wanted.

If the town and county doesn’t want to back its football club, and attendances fall then this is one part of what defines a third tier club, yes.

Never said it was all the fans’ fault.

The owner wasn't making money available when the fans did turn up - did you see how much we spent in the January transfer window of the playoff season?

Evans splashed out 150K on Freddie Sears ... in 2000 we spent more than £2 million on Marcus Stewart at the same stage which effectively secured promotion (Bolton 1st leg of playoff was the Stewart show) ....

The club has been stagnating for years and thousands of fans have drifted off bored and frustrated because they sense we have an owner with no ambition ... and they're right.

Fans would turn up if they had seen decent investment in transfer windows, but the stagnation of the club has left it a very boring football club, hence why people 'cant be bothered' anymore.

The club has ruined the fanbase by itself over the last 10 or so years.

I said years ago on this forum that the prices and the customer service (i.e. the shocking catering on the day) are putting people off from going and stopping the club making easy money.

They were still charging £35 a match until recently (plus an on the day fee if not bought in advance).

We have had 1 good season really in those years. The club is now paying for the years it was trying to rinse the fans (well at least the non-ST fans). People have found other things to do on a Saturday afternoon (and most probably more enjoyable) and others just cannot afford it.

There must be some supporters children who probably support Arsenal or someone now because their parents never took them because it cost too much. I would not have supported Ipswich if my dad didn't take me regularly. Now that the premier league is so easily accessed, if kids are not going to go to games, that is all they are watching and end up supporting one of those teams...…….

The club's short-termism over the last 10 years is now hurting them.

So the fans can show commercial judgment over spending £30-£40 but the owner can’t and has to spend tens of millions?

Our current average attendance is 17.5K which is higher than Crystal Palace's average attendance when they were promoted to the Premier League in 2013.

You wouldn't say they deserve to be in the third tier.

We are in the throes of our worst ever start to a season in the professional history of the club -- do you really expect people to pour through the gates?

In 2006, our end of season average attendance in the Championship was higher than Wolves, Leeds, Derby, Southampton and 2016 Premier League champions Leicester.

A year later Marcus Evans took control of the club and since then we have put together our worst run of league finishes since the 1950s.

We are not a third division club, unfortunately we are run like one which is why we're heading back there ...

There's an elephant in this room that's too painful for many of you to acknowledge.

Of course some of your fans are to blame. Anyone who wanted MM out, booed, protested or wittered on here is partly to blame. You demanded a gamble, got your way and it looks like it might be failing.

It goes back further than that though - some of you *still* seem to think you're a big club and deserve to be doing better. You're not and you don't. If you'd accepted that and hoped for the best, then maybe you'd still have MM, or at least be less bludy agro towards an owner that has pumped in much lala, without which, you'd be in even more trouble. Now he seems next out.

Apologies if some feel I'm talking out of turn - feel free to bash me up with your put downs.
