Here's a sample from a sports publication at hand :
"After successive failures to win the First Division Play-Offs, Ipswich fans were looking for a scapegoat. They chose to blame a goalpost". As one person explained :
"About three seasons back there was a particular goalpost in front of the North Stand which seemed to intervene whenever possible in play-off games and it always cost us further progress"
Indeed Ipswich players were so incapable of avoiding the wooden beam when going for goal that supporters came to one obvious conclusion : it was cursed by evil spirits. A campaign was duly launched to have the post replaced and eventually fans carried out their own amateur exorcism. (The Tractor Boys subsequent promotion and excellent form in the EPL this season are evidently all down to their efforts)
Date of print June 2001.
Realize it's a little out of date but relevant nonetheless. Seems we require another exorcism of sorts to get out the mess we're at. I wonder if the same individuals involved in that particular endeavor would consider returning and giving it another attempt.
