Unhelpful reporting from the Guardian 11:43 - Mar 15 with 2089 viewsStokieBlue

Not that I am surprised, but this is pretty poor science reporting from the Guardian and the emotive headline really doesn't help:

https://www.theguardian.com/technology/shortcuts/2019/mar/13/driverless-cars-rac

A more accurate report from the Register shines a lot more light on the nuance of the paper:

That is a bit disingenuous isn't it. I assume they think humanising what is ultimately a pure image classification issue will make it more likely to be clicked on. Effectively this is simply a matter of feature recognition - a huge are in image analysis (more normally in automatic, algorithm-based feature classification in satellite images - e.g. telling the difference between crop types for checking subsidies, identifying different features on slopes for hazard assessment).

Doesn't sound as interesting does it? Racist robots are much sexier.

There isnt that much difference between the reports.

They both say that cameras struggle to recognise dark skinned pedestrians.

They both say that there are other types of sensor, radar and lidar, that have no such problems.

The difference is that the Guardian adds that cameras are cheaper and so there is market pressure to use camera only systems.

The reg ignores the coat thing entirely.

I think that the Guardian is right to raise the cost of the better technologies as a concern.

Apart from the massive difference that the Guardian headline declares technology racist which is totally incorrect and emotive.

Why isn't the headline "Costs of technology could prove dangerous" if you think that's the main thrust of the article.

I think it's pretty appalling reporting.

Sure it's an emotive headline, but who just goes on the headline?

Why mention racism at all when it's clearly not racist.

I like the Guardian. Good recipes too; Felicity Cloake.

Or is it Clark? Obviously I'm a big fan.

I know a Sun journalist whose preferred 'go to' read is the Guardian although I know it could be argued that if you worked on The Sun then any other option may be a welcome read.

Each time I see him he seems to have a small stack of various papers under his arm as he likes to keep up with what the competition are up to.

This is how the article starts

"Machine vision’ is struggling to recognise darker-skinned pedestrians, and cost pressures could make things worse"

This is how the article starts
Maybe the author didn't express it very well but it is a fact isn't it?
Robots do have serious problems identifying dark objects

I don't disagree with your point entirely but there is a serious side to it

It's not racist so labeling it that way allows people to push an agenda.

It's bad algorithms which will improve.

I assumed it would be tongue-in-cheek to begin with, but having skipped through it, it is a bit daft to be fair.

The author looks -- although wearing a shirt in the photo -- a bit like he could equally be at home wearing a hessian sack.

On the other hand, your orginal complaint was about the reporting not the headline. I'd agree that the headline is emotive and the sort of thing you'd expect in the Daily Mail et al. As for the actual content of the article, I think it's OK.

As for The Reg, it's kind of a digital technology tabloid, whilst it's no DM I wouldn't hold it up as a paragon of reporting virtue.

That's a fair point on the Register, it's still a more thorough article than the Guardian one though. I guess you are correct that my main annoyance in the headline which I really dislike.
