Last time it was a Russian plane, don't think I would want to be flying anywhere closeby. [Post edited 1 Jul 2019 11:01]

What goes up must come down ... somewhere. A high speed missile fired from Syria, missing its target and flying in a ballistic arc could easily hit Cyprus if heading in the right direction.

Chances of hitting innocent plane on its route?

Very small, as would not be the designated target and be out of fuel for maneuvering by that stage. A 'plane being a very small and fast-moving target compared with an entire island. Also, in a ballistic lob over that distance, the missile would spend most of the time well above airline flight altitude, only dropping through it at the end. Edit: Correction - if it's the S-200, it may have the range (depending upon version), but a civilian aircraft would only become a target if so designated by the operator. Big old missile, the S-200. That entirely depends on the angle, intercept location when the propellant runs out. I would still think that it's a rather long distance even on a parabolic arc although the total range is 150 miles so it's possible. Surely they should also self-destruct once the target has been missed. In a rather nice twist for this forum, the code name for the missile is GAMMON. SB [Post edited 1 Jul 2019 10:55]

Heat seeking missiles are only short range?

"a civilian aircraft would only become a target if so designated by the operator." Good thing that hasn't happened anywhere in recent years then. [Post edited 1 Jul 2019 14:40]

S-200 is a large, long-range radar guided missile.

I assume you saw that the investigation and prosecution requests into said incident was dismissed on here.... SB

S-200 can reach mach 6 in later versions. That gives a heck of a long range in a ballistic arc.

That is true, although it's a rather rubbish design if it doesn't self-destruct after it's fuel is finished. It's also totally dependent on the angle towards the target, the more obtuse the angle, the shorter the range. It's certainly possible for it to hit Cyprus though. Such missiles should never be allowed to continue totally guided by the rules of physics to possibly land on some poor unsuspecting individual. SB

Doesn't self destruction rather give the game away regarding other forces identifying, locating and determining the trajectory of a missile? If it lands in one piece at a remote location then there is a better chance of recovery by whoever is trying to control it by radar, they should get to the scene first to clear up the mess as much as possible and destroy any evidence of wrong doing. Might not apply to limpet mines...

It's a Soviet-designed system. They weren't exactly renowned for caring about things like that.
