How long do Elton John and David have to stop breathing for in order to "neutralise" a long flight on a private jet?

it's like thunberg sailing across the atlantic in a multi-million pound racing yacht which then requires 4 homeward flights for the outward crew and 4 outward flights for the homeward crew. that's quite an odd way of saving on co2 emissions.

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

People just shouldn't say anything. It's not like something quite bad is happening.

I don't disagree with that, but it's pretty galling hearing from people in literal ivory towers who are continuing to do what they want.

For me it's personalising a structural problem. It would be rank hypocrisy for, say, a polluting industrialist to pontificate on matters climactic. But just pointing at rich individuals for a very, very minimal level of pollution is odd. Simply by living we all pollute.

Until enough attention is drawn to the major causes, and change is implemented, it just seems like wanting to delegitimise the debate.

My point is, Elton John can afford to "offset" the carbon burnt by having his friends fly on private jet to his holiday home in the south of France while you and I get told we can't have gas hobs in new homes anymore. Or in other words, if you're rich enough you can do what you want while the rest of us are told to sit down shut up and do what we're told.

You should be richer then.

I do agree it's slightly hypocritical but at the same time my point above remains. As much as it's great people do their bit at reducing, reusing, recycling, whatever, but in reality it matters very little what you do with your coffee cup when the likes of the US, China and India continue to pollute at will.

Political change, sadly, comes from the media. And the media need the stories to create awareness. So the more people are talking about it, the quicker change may happen.

Well your second paragraph is utterly true. China for instance continues to build huge coal fired power stations in Mongolia meaning you and I not firing up our lounge wood burners in December to warm up is meaningless from an environmental persepective. I just enjoy pointing out the hypocrisy.

But I don't think you can talk about the environment and position yourself as a campaigner and be that hypocritical. Private Jet to Sicily to deliver a speech on Climate Change is beyond satire.....

Then a private jet from Meghan into Ibiza to celebrate her birthday.....

Plus, the richer you are generally, the more you can afford to do things the 'right' way - but the fact that they still will want to do what is convenient shows that up - but Elton pays for it so it doesn't matter that they flew into his £16m house in France.

The payment is just a way of making them feel less guilty, if they cared they wouldn't do it.

I'm far from a royal hater, but they need to lead the way on matters like this, and if they are chosing to then they need to commit and do it properly with no excuses.

This exactly. If they really cared, they'd not pollute in the first place and use the money to do something proactive, rather than just offsetting the effects of their lifestyle.

It really rubs me up the wrong way when I'm told I shouldn't enjoy my short-haul holiday because 'the environment', but some posh family we all arbitrarily decided are better than everyone else can jet around the world at leisure because they have the money to cover it.

They either are enviromentalists or they aren't quite simply - they have a life that is in most ways very priviliged but also one that is under intense scrutiny - they aren't normal people and aren't treated as such and that comes with a responsibility.

I don't begrudge them doing it, but they need to maybe come down of their high horse about the issue - had it been William and Kate who I've not seen try and make a big play fo this then it would be different matter

they all have a life style - constant pointless international travel - which is completely unsustainable in environmental terms. and through the media that is promoted as what others should aspire to if they're rich enough. rather than silly gestures they could set a public example by only flying economy so as to minimise the impact of their travel - i suspect they would then stay at home more.

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show
