So how about this, then? 13:15 - Oct 18 with 4307 viewsfactual_blue

A shop in Bury St Edmunds sells vegan dental floss.

No, your eyes don't deceive you. Vegan. Dental. Floss.*

*Apparently ordinary dental floss contains beeswax and/or silk, both of which represent the unacceptable exploitation of animals.

Well yeah, vegan products tend to not contain products derived from animal bodies or their labour. What did you think vegan dental floss would contain? Beef drippings?!

Cotton reels then?

24 reels of vegan dental floss - about £96 (roughly £4 a reel)
24 reels of cotton thread - about £5.

I, along with vegan Sarah Pascoe, assumed veganism was about 'a bit of dinner'.

(Sarah Pascoe was kicked out of the Vegan Society for not being sufficiently hardcore)

Veganism is about rejecting animal products on the whole.

Then again Sparks once said I'm not a real vegan because I rehomed a cat so might as well go bath in the blood of a thousand dead cows now.

Isn't worrying about the labour efforts of bees a bit excessive? There's a reason the saying is 'as busy as a bee'.

I think honey and beeswax fits under the umbrella of veganism yes. It's debated amongst the vegan community but I'd say it's just an extra two products to give up. Beyond having the flu and Crunchy Nut Cornflakes I can't think of much I ate that had honey in it.

A lot of sweets would be vegan if not for the beeswax though, which annoys me. Haribo jelly beans are a good example.

Bees are only kept (and in a natural kind of way) for very good reasons though, particularly to pollinate all your lovely veggies and grains. Honey and beeswax are only by-products, so surely could be given exemptions?

Honey and beeswax are used by bees, they're far from byproducts.

I must admit to being a fan of some vegan beer. Yes its cloudy but the lack of finings means well made beer retains a lot of flavour.

But then there are the 'enslaved' bee populations transported around in lorries to pollinate avocados ....

What about the fruit and veg at farms that are pollinated by the bees that are driven around in the back of trucks? Is that not unnatural and cruel to them?

I believe that's only practised in the USA.

Is keeping a bee to do what it does naturally and not stealing from the bee slavery?

The inference from that is there is no such thing as slavery at all; even human-on-human slavery becomes a myth.

Define 'free'

In America, every man is free
To take care of his home and his family
You'll be as happy as a monkey in a monkey tree
Ya'll going to be an American

I don't know really. I don't really eat avocados and it's not something practised in the UK to my knowledge. It's also something there's very limited knowledge on in terms of how wide practised it is and who's doing it.

It's also one of those things that I'm happy to debate with other vegans, but when it's raised by meat eaters as a whateraboutery question it becomes more like a stick to beat with as opposed to a logical point being made because the care of animals is a concern for them.

Not to say that's what you're doing of course, but being vegan is a journey to more ethical living and is constantly progressing, it's not a final solution with all the answers.

Glad to see somebody appreciates good lyrics, even if Gav prevents me from posting the unadulterated first verse...

You have a choice re veg, honey and beeswax, as with most other things.

Plenty of organic farmers & growers all over the UK (I believe BTR is one). Also many unenslaved bees in hives, esp round here, where it's frequently produced by individuals with private hives who have a mutually beneficial agreement with local farmers to place the hives on their land, on or next to local heather moors.
