The Rise of Skywalker 7. The Last Jedi 8. Revenge of the Sith 9. Solo 10. Phantom Menace 11. Attack of the Clones A couple of controversial ones from me. Firstly, Empire at number 2 rather than its customary number 1. I appreciate it's probably a better film but I enjoy A New Hope more and was too young to have that "WTF?" moment when it turned out Darth Vader was Luke's old man. Secondly, I have The Last Jedi as my least favourite of the newest trilogy when many have it as their favourite. It just didn't work for me, it felt overly long, some of the sub plots were just a bit grating, and the main baddie got bested far too easily when he'd barely been built up as a character. The finale was good but overall it didn't work for me and it feels discordant within the trilogy as a whole. The prequels and Solo are pure dog turd. Rogue One is a great little film, I was almost tempted to put it higher. [Post edited 18 May 2020 8:36]

Return of the Jedi 7. Last Jedi 8. Attack of the Clones 9. Phantom Menace 10. Rise of Skywalker 11. Solo A couple of comments: - I am a Star Wars tragic. Before Disney bought the franchise, I owned all 100+ expended world novels and was one of the ones queuing at midnight to watch the Special Editions back in 97 (Han shot first...grrr!!!). - There is a hair's breadth between numbers 1, 2 and 3 for me. - I'm surprised Return of the Jedi is as high as #6, because I have 37 years of pent up dislike for the film - mainly because as a 9-10 year old I didn't want f***ing teddy bears bringing down the Empire!! - Related to that, I think it just goes to show how poor some of the prequel and sequel films are. - I don't have such antipathy towards Attack of the Clones as many do. I really enjoyed the whole Obi-Wan arc and the silliness of Yoda's lightsaber duel. - Rise of Skywalker would have placed higher after I watched it those two times back at Christmas; but I bought the DVD 2-3 weeks ago when it was released and turned it off half way through. It is an utter utter mess of a film and even more disappointing when you realise there isn't another movie coming along to fix all the problems with it. - Solo, such a vanilla film. I watched it once in the cinema and have never felt the urge to watch again. - Rogue One and The Mandalorian are the only reason I'm still invested in the franchise - when it can be this good, then there is 'hope' (yes that last line is deliberate - told you I was a tragic)

FFS Herbie. I’ve had to take you off the naughty step to read my own thread. Agree with Rogue One. It fits so well with the a New Hope that you could watch the two back to back and it would be seamless. The Last Jedi was saved by the final 45 minutes but the killing of Snoke was a big let down. Imo The Force awakens is just a remake of A NEw Hope with different characters. Yiu can only blow up a Death Star so many times. I’ve ranked TPM higher than it so deserves due to it getting the franchise going again after so many years which was a big deal at the time.

You are clearly a wrong 'un. The Force Awakens (which is basically a remix of previous story arcs) ahead of the classic Return Of The Jedi?!? I can only presume you like pretty visuals more than a story. I disagree with everyone else on here on Solo as well. Decent film, certainly better than the prequels.

Whilst TFA is essentially a remake - it is a remake of a classic and still works as a coherent film (which so few films in the franchise have). It is also beautiful: the TIEs and X-wings battling in atmosphere; all of the scenes on Jakku; the planet Luke is hiding out on. It also has the death of Han - which until about 60 seconds beforehand I had no sense was coming. Watching the reaction of my (then) 10 and 7 year old kids was something truly special - unlike my (now) 14 year olds reaction after ROS ("Do I have to come with you next week to watch it again - I thought it was rubbish").

I think it’s the best of the prequels. It’s also still too this day the Star Wars film with the most practical effects, despite misconceptions.

Return of the Jedi is a bunch of teddy bears bringing down the Empire. It's hardly Dickensian storytelling. And it also includes destroying the Death Star again, so it's not even especially original. Despite it being derivative I enjoyed The Force Awakens. It was good to see a new Star Wars film that wasn't terrible and it has some decent dialogue and nice set pieces. Solo dying is a pretty epic franchise moment too, even if it was obvious it was coming. I watched Solo last night as I thought I'd give it a second chance. It's really quite terrible. The plot is thin and it's hard to care about any of the characters. The acting is fairly mediocre. It's just a nothing film really. Still better than two of the three from the prequels for me, but that says more about the prequels than about Solo.

Charles Soule’s Vader graphic novel series picks up almost exactly from Vader donning the suit in that film and chronicles the first year of Vader in the suit, it’s astonishingly good. I grew up with the prequels so they will always have a special place in my heart but without the additional materials they struggle to stand alone in a lot of situations. The animated series, the Clone Wars saved that whole time period in canon really, the recent finale was especially brilliant as it rah concurrently with Order 66 in Revenge of the Sith. The series really beefed out what was some severely under developed character work.

I love all the creature work/puppets in Return of the Jedi, I love Luke throwing down his lightsaber and the whole throne room scene, I love the allegory for the Vietnam war with the Ewoks; as a kid it blew my mind and watching it still gives me a warm fuzzy feeling. The Phantom Menace is the first Star Wars film I saw in the cinema and in my opinion is underrated. People crack on about Jar Jar Binks and sone of the hammy dialogue like the whole franchise isn’t fully of goofy characters and hammy lines, they’re essentially troupes of the series. The dual of fates is still the greatest live action lightsaber battle in the series and the pod racing scene was groundbreaking. [Post edited 18 May 2020 10:44]

Fair enough, likewise Phantom Menace was the first Star Wars film I saw at the cinema but my reaction was slightly different than yours. I know 'comedy' characters and hammy dialogue appear across all the films but it's especially evident and highly grating in the prequels. Return of the Jedi is still good, but for me it's the worst of the original trilogy. The Ewoks brining down the Empire with rocks and spears, rehashing the Death Star from the first film, I think the encounter between Luke and Darth is less powerful than in Empire. It's all opinions though at the end of the day, every one of the films has massive flaws to go with all of the good stuff which is why fans rarely agree on a definitive ranking. I'm glad to see lots of love for Rogue One though, such a good film. The ending feels so tense even though you know what's going to happen.
