Green shoots 22:46 - Aug 25 with 1112 views | monty_radio | I see a lot of posters pointing to various green shoots of optimism: El Miz looks classy; Dobra could trouble opponents; Drinan seems to understand his role etc. However these promising signs may develop, in the short term, they are unlikely to be the key that really opens the door. So far we've seen a midfield that can ping the ball, but not in the areas that hurt; an uncertain defence and a near non-existent front line. I realise that the quality of the opposition will not be as good, but we need bigger statements of intent beyond just being tidy in areas where nothing much is ever achieved. Ward, grizzled pro that he is, reflects that kind of know-how that shows for the ball where it hurts and looks to play others in. We need more of that. Some of these great hopes will disappear from present view to loan places that we couldn't pin down on a map nor be reliably able to attribute to their own league. While the likes of Judge, Nolan, Norwood and Huws fail to up to speed and show that they still have what it takes, then these younger hopefuls will not be able to get the proper nurtured intro that any who are not loaned out would need.

That the aforenamed players show themselves?

Green shoots on 00:01 - Aug 26 with 986 views | Ryorry | If building a team based on a strong defence is to be hoped for, are we likely to get any new bods in? I've no idea with this all-change situation re cap and window extension. Do we need to sell first? How likely are loanees? (general question, not just aimed at you monty).

Maybe stop being in denial. Be realistic; play football like a Div 3 team not to our historical strengths Holy has maybe the longest kick in this division so let him kick it rugby style into touch adjacent to their box, or kick long and centrally which their defenders will gobble up but we can challenge for the second ball. These tactics are even better if done swiftly after their attacks break down with many of their side in our half. Our full backs may not be suited to being wing backs. So many goals conceded with them out of position. We really don't have goals in our team let's hope Dobs El Miz and Lancaster can be our saviours. Failing that Messi may seek a challenge.

I remember the “kick long” approach against Fleetwood - it worked so well derisive cheers started to echo around Portman Road after Harry Souttar made his 100th unchallenged headed clearance.

I don't think our players are the issues, I think Lambert is.

Probably after a home game where we give away a few stupid goals, and with wide midfielders like Edwards in the wide attacking positions such that it looks like we're playing 1 up front at home to some godawful team and making a mess of it.

That's the fear. But hopefully this time it won't be a complete abandonment. In the same way that whilst I heartily applaud the intent to play this way, there are times when a big wellie is required, such as when you're on the edge of the six yard box with two strikers around you. It doesn't have to be an absolute one thing or the polar opposite. That is for children. Progress towards building a squad that can play this way and accept the losses and fark ups that will come along the way, without screaming the place down at every little opportunity.
