In a school near me.
My son's school .. daily emails of more and more kids isolating and teachers testing positive.
This really is a pointless lockdown with schools open.
I understand education is important. So why not scrap the 6 weeks summer holiday and use that holiday time during a lockdown.

It really isn't pointless but it is bloody tough, we had very difficult decisions to make this week and it went against government guidance to a degree. The wrath of parents is being felt with many upset that kids are made to isolate and others up that schools are open. Every day in school is part of a better education and a more normal healthy childhood for those children |  |

Surely a safer 'compromise' option would have been to have split remote and on-site teaching with fewer year groups on site which would allow for smaller classes and less bodies in close proximity in both buildings and on public transport.
Universities right now shouldn't be open for on-site teaching at all. [Post edited 18 Nov 2020 10:06]

At what point does it become impossible to actually teach though?
I know of 1 school that is very close to having to close it's doors as it's got some many teachers and TA's isolating. |  |

I have a(very minor) teaching qualification and role as part of my job spec. We've shifted a hell of a lot online, have reduced class sizes and restricted some of our courses to Trust employees only. It's not ideal(we'll be merely 'maintaining' numbers of people with active ILS/ALS/PILS/PALS/TILS qualifications rather than seeking to increase them rather than we usually do, but realistically it's the only way to maintain *something* rather than just carry on with minor adjustments which involve greater risk. | |

Why not tear up everybody's contracts and allow business to do and treat their staff as they please?
Had government ministers listened to teachers, unions, scientists, each other etc, we'd not be in this mess. Schools on a rota system would have made more sense, and whilst being challenging would have created greater clarity and mitigated risks better than what we have now.
The better case would be to spread those six weeks across the year and shorten terms, especially as this winter term is so long and brutal most years, let alone without the added burdens on us now. |  |

Absolutely. Funny how rates started climbing significantly after schools and universities started back. And they blamed and scapegoated hospitality. Yes, I have a dog in that race as I am CAMRA's National Campaigns Director, but if someone showed me evidence that pubs, bars and rsetaurants were a major factor I would have accepted it willingly. Schools,. especially secondary schools, do not have the same protective requirements as pubs, shops, even libraries, and kids are less likely to socially distance. Friend of mine told me her son was scared to go back to school and insisted on wearing a mask, even though nobody else did so he wasn't that well protected. Uni students also have this behaviour (yes, I am generalising) but the places with the hightes rates were university towns. Not exactly rocket science.
So, it isn't a lockdown. And it won't work, it will just damage businesses, people's mental health and continue to overload the NHS (and, yes, I have a dog in that race too, as my daughter is sister on a COVID ward at a hospital in Kent). |  |

Evidence? Not sure what you are hoping for but given the lack of a properly functioning recording of hospitality visitors on top of a shambles of a track and trace system then you are probably going to be disappointed.
What we do have though is epidemiological experts who tell us that the virus is spread when people interact indoors. Basically breathing in the air from someone who is infected is how it is largely transmitted. So on that basis it is clear that hospitality and schools will both be major points where transmission occurs, don't see those points as arguable tbh.
So those in power need to make some tough choices, close shops? pubs? schools? home visiting? gyms? workplaces?
I have a lot of empathy for those in the trade and recognise we must do all we can to help them financially to minimise closures. But at the end of the day given a choice of opening schools or pubs then I can't see how anyone can seriously suggest pubs are a higher priority.

Not to disagree with sentiments in this thread, but my boy's school has had two cases so far and no year-wide lockdown. In fairness, sounds like we've just been lucky. |  |
