Ipswich town centre is rapidly becoming a ghost town on 14:58 - Dec 17 with 3784 views | jontysnut | Sadly it's not the only one. Those in between towns, which are neither twee and touristy or big and bustling have probably all had it. Bradford looks like Detroit at the moment. I read something about the end of 'fried egg towns' a central yolk of shops and commerce surrounded by residential. I can see Ipswich becoming much more scrambled.

Ipswich town centre is rapidly becoming a ghost town on 15:24 - Dec 17 with 3722 views | Illinoisblue | It’s the slow change. There’s no real need for a town centre in the way we know it. Retail parks and online shopping mean you don’t need to pay to park and go to town.

Ipswich town centre is rapidly becoming a ghost town on 15:48 - Dec 17 with 3661 views | snudge27 | Likewise, when Westfield at Stratford is only an hour away by train, or 90mins drive, suddenly Ipswich town centre or one of the out-of-town retail parks doesn't seem such an attractive option.

Same in Cambridge. Went in yesterday for a coffee and to the building society and it was like a midweek in the summer holidays, minus the tourists. Thousands of shops will close in 2021. The only upsides I can see are less traffic and more buildings that could be converted into affordable housing.

Yep. This year will have simply sped up what has been happening for a few years. The age of generic chain shop high streets is coming to an end as what they do is done better and cheaper online. We're moving more towards town centres being a place to socialise (coffee and cake etc) or go to smaller shops that specialise a bit more.

It's unfortunate for those in the middle of it at the moment, but retail needed something to speed things along. Debenhams has been dying slowly for years now. Get them gone and turn the area into flats. The Ancient House is such a great building to waste on someone wanting to sell spatulas. Get them gone and get the pub/cafe in there with pop up retail spaces for those wanting to extend their Etsy opperations.

Ipswich town centre also suffers from being so spread out, it's a long way from the end of Carr Street to the end of Westgate Street. Condense that down a bit and it doesn't feel quite so empty. The town is stuck though, missed opportunities followed by factors too big for any municipal council to counter. Hopefully most of the restaurants in the town survive as that is one thing that has improved since I was in my 20s.

A friend, who knows an accountant in Bury St Eds tells me that the accountant's clients with an established internet presence, or who quickly moved to one, have done at least OK. The others are all struggling. This applies to all businesses it seems.

Ipswich town centre is rapidly becoming a ghost town on 20:51 - Dec 17 with 3038 views | oldbluey | I'm old enough to remember the wonder of Christmas at Footmans in Ipswich. Rides for the kids and marionettes in the basement. One of my brothers who is younger than me but in his 70s now, once punched Santa in the nose in Footmans!. Blood everywhere, Santa swearing loudly and my 5 year old brother looking pleased with himself The wonder of a Suffolk Christmas in the 1950s.
