Bittersweet after thinking we might do it 23:04 - Jul 11 with 1678 views | Mullet | That goal after 2 mins was bigger than anything in my lifetime. But it felt like we lost momentum and struggled for far too long in that game. Can’t fault those subs to give us as many penalty options as possible. The keepers decided that shoot out and when Pickford saved from Jorginho I thought we’d all but done it, there’s a reason Donnarumma is the best young keeper in the world. Where will he be in another decade? Italy were brilliant this tournament, it was fun to dream but they’re worthy winners. We can all thank Southgate for what he’s done so far. Two very good tournaments and we are getting better under him.

England got to a WC semi in 2018, a Euro final in 2021 and there is another World Cup next year. [Post edited 11 Jul 2021 23:13]

There might have been some mercy in losing more convincingly I guess. To take them so close hurts even more, but the previous two games and the unity that team has brought this country shouldn’t be chucked away either.

Not really, we pushed them close, shows how far we've developed as a team. Heck, they've already achieved things no other England team ever has. Edit: The not really related to the 'mercy'. [Post edited 11 Jul 2021 23:19]

They have but, like the WC....I'm not sure we will ever have a better chance of winning both tournaments.

That's part of the problem. It needs to be seen as a process, incremental growth, not a one-off chance. This team are young, they will improve.

I remember a very good coach telling a team I played in that the worst game to lose was a semi final. Yes it’s sore to lose a final but if you lose a semi, you’ll forever be questioning and wondering how you would have done if you got to the final. Desperately close and at half time I thought you were in with a great shout. Maybe extra time v the Danes took a toll? Have to say I think you’re right that Italy, on balance deserved it but you can take a lot of positives. Of course questions will be asked and analysis will follow but You can look ahead to Qatar and beyond with a very talented young team and coach. Keep knocking and the door will eventually open. Bittersweet after thinking we might do it on 23:25 - Jul 11 with 1332 views | N2_Blue | Completely disagree about the subs. Players that don't kick a ball in the game should never take a pen. They are cold, don't have any adrenaline, haven't got a feel for the ball. It's no surprise to me they missed. Very odd and strange. [Post edited 11 Jul 2021 23:29]

Let's be blunt, we didn't push them close. They were all over us from the 46th minute onwards. The stats look atricious considering the game was at Wembley. We fluked it to penalties and then fell the wrong side of the draw. Great tournament for us but, with France and Portugal falling early, this was a brilliant chance on home turf.

Yes entirely true but...at some point you do need to take your chances. Like Croatia....tonight showed that it was there for the taking and we didn't, sadly. Here's hoping it's a learning experience for not just the players but for Southgate and his coaching team.

We did push them close. It was a draw even after extra time. Defence is a skill as much as attack.

But if you develop a good way of playing and keep it up, then you get multiple chances. Get into a habit of making finals. Make ourselves not the plucky underdog. It's not a one-off, then the chance has gone.

Agreed. It needs to be long term and, as you say, a process, no argument from me there.

That's football, though, right? This side are likeable, and making palpable improvements over the past 5 years. It's not a fair comparison, but the feeling this morning (whilst pretty grim) is hugely, hugely different to that felt after the Iceland game. The next step, for me, is how Southgate progresses to a style of football that allows for both Foden and Sancho to play - frankly, either of them get into any other European international side. England set ourselves up not to lose this tournament - and we succeeded - but, at risk of setting this post up to burn, that style of football comes under scrutiny as soon as the end result doesn't come (similar to MM and Ipswich, I suppose). Winning tournaments is fcking tough, but, for the first time in a long time, we're now in a position, as a team, where we can, actually, stand a chance of winning them - for the first time in 15 years; or, more realistically, 25. This team is on the up - looking around Europe, the French will (annoyingly) be very strong for some time to come, but the Germans and Spanish are on the wane, and Belgium's 'Golden Generation' look to be going the same way as ours (Doku is some talent, mind....). Portugal don't look great without Ronaldo, and the Dutch remain work in progress. Italy, of course, are powerful, although Chiellini must surely retire at 50. We're in a good place.

Rice on 13:58 - Jul 12 with 771 views | unstableblue | I think when Rice tired second half (eventually subbed) we lost something that was causing the Italians a real issue, Kane did also have a good first half, if too deep, and was opening up and switching play really well... Sterling had just lost some of his sharpness though... And once the Italians settled and dominated the midfield we just sat too deep. Thought we rallied around Grealish arrival... but Italians made subs earlier and they became more effective. Then you had some dark arts from the Italians. I think Southgate should get some criticism for the penalty taker choice, but I think he'll learn from this for Qatar. And as stated he's a role model for the country.
