So these horse events in the Olympics 15:06 - Aug 2 with 1536 views | bluelagos | Take national hunt or flat racing - and we give the horse the credit, the jockey is a side issue to for most of us - not unreasonable given the horse does all the work. So how come in the Olympics the horse jumping / dancing - equestrian events - the rider gets all the glory / medals? Last time I looked it was the horse doing all the jumping/dancing...

The real medal should surely go to the person who got the horse all the way to Japan. Steering it around Tokyo is a breeze in comparison.

I suspect, if you give the horse a choice, it would choose not to be flown around the world to jump fences and prance about to music.

Agree, although horses are more than capable of telling you to do one if they don't wish to perform. One refused to race the other day when the stalls opened.

So these horse events in the Olympics on 16:01 - Aug 2 with 1044 views | Ryorry | "So how come in the Olympics the horse jumping / dancing - equestrian events - the rider gets all the glory / medals?" Short answer - they don't. If you look at the riders contending for the medals, they all point downwards at the horses when getting applause as they finish, indicating it was the horses wot won it; and the horses get multiple pats and hugs from riders, grooms and support team as they finish. It's an equal partnership, clearly neither could do it without the other. And yes, the horses do enjoy it. There's an element of "look at meeee" showing off in the best performances, and no human could force a half-ton animal to perform well - it'd either refuse to go, or be so disobedient/stubborn it'd go straight to the bottom of the marking, with other riders making their disaproval clear, and no doubt the governing body intervening also. Basically, equine sports outside of racing are based on 2-way partnerships of love & trust between horses & their riders.

Joint effort? Put the horse on the rider and watch them get over one of the show jumping fences :-)

Charlotte Dujardin worked her way up from being an ordinary groom in a dressage yard for several years where her talent was spotted. In her childhood, her mother set up and ran her own business to fund Charlotte competing in juvenile events. Laura Collett started her own successful business in a rented yard when she was 19 to fund herself. She was additionally supported by sponsorship + creating a syndicate to lease the ownership of a good young horse. It is an expensive sport, but not one that requires privilege or personal/family wealth to succeed - just talent and hard work. *Edited for grammar. [Post edited 2 Aug 2021 18:22]

I didn't say otherwise, my Mother has done some in the past and we are far from wealthy as a family, however equine sports would be looked at a lot closer and harder if it weren't for the 'right people' having an interest. I've been aware of some less than pleasant training methods used on horses being trained for show jumping, I'm not saying it's the norm, but it's sadly not hugely uncommon either.
