Just reflecting on Tuesday night 15:59 - Nov 4 with 1267 viewshomer_123

I think it would be fair to say I've been quite vocal about my concerns with how things have been going under Cooke but I think it is also right to say I've stated that I'd love to see him succeed here.

To that end, whilst some bits and pieces have been going on in work today, I've had some time to ruminate over Tuesday night.

Two or three small but I believe significant things stand out for me.

1. Cooke resisted the temptation to match up against Wycombe - as frustrating as it has been to see us not adjust our approach and style before or during matches - this was actually pleasing to see and I am glad he kept to his approach and ethos for us. One of looking to play our way and impose ourselves. Yes, the forced change with Coulson coming off and Burgess coming on did help just shore us up a touch; but overall our wide players were very effective, especially the second half and very well supported by Morsy and Evans in the middle. Had we matched them up, I think the result would have been very different.

2. We lost the first 15 to 20 mins but, possibly, for the first time we then began to impose ourselves on Wycombe more and more. We dictated the play for long periods throughout, playing our way, knocking the ball about with purpose and composure and it was effective whilst, on the whole, dealing very well with what Wycombe were literally throwing at us. Our attacking threat was evident throughout and four goals didn't really flatter us in the end.

3. Fragility - it simply wasn't there. A very good save from Walton in the second half being the sum total of what Wymcobe had in genuine chances (apart from a comical spell of pinball). Yes, we gave away a number of free kicks in a short space of time but Walton and the defence handled it well and we were a threat on the break. We didn't look fragile, we coped under a bit of pressure very well. Also, barring one or two small mistakes from KVY very early doors (understandable) and one or two from Harper when he came on (lovely ball to release Celina) we didn't look like gifting Wycombe a goal at any point.

So, in summary, yes the 4-1 win was excellent and deserved - in fact it was a really entertaining game of football - something we have wanted from Town for a long time. But I think there were some signs that 'incremental improvements' are showing. Which I think is the biggest takeaway from Tuesday.

It would be great to build on that with 4 or 6 points against Oxford and Sunderland after the cup games.

Agreed, 4 points from the next two leagues games would reflect a consistency in terms of our form.

Yes, my reaction to the team selection was "Brave" but, for all my criticism of Cook, I liked that.

A couple of points on yours:

1. We got better with Burgess on for Coulson, an enforced change (that took too long) that made us more robust against they physical stuff;

3. I was still concerned that 3-2 with more than a few minutes to go might be a problem, changing the momentum of the match in the same way our first did. The two goal cushion helped a lot there.

The key though is building on this result against Oxford, Sunderland and Rotherham. We need at least five points I think given the start.

For me the other thing worth mentioning is the bond between the team and the fans.

The players (and the manager btw) are recognising and appreciating the numbers we are travelling in. The fans are recognising and appreciating the effort, quality and football the team is producing.

The bond is getting stronger and stronger every game, which can only serve us well. There appears to be a unity throughout the entire club, right up to the top of the club. I can't remember the spine of the club being this strong in my lifetime.

To maintain a push we really need to win 2 out of Oxford, Sunderland and Rotherham. I feel more confident about that now than I did Tuesday at 7.40pm. I still worry that we might be bullied a bit at Sunderland and at home to Rotherham.

I think there had been a difference in the Plymouth game, after going behind we did actually look like getting back in it - simply hadn't been the case vs Cheltenham, Burton, Accrington, and even Cambridge in that respect

Yes, as I said, we lost the first 15 to 20 and were a goal down but from thereon in we started to impose ourselves. Notably Morsy and Evans in middle. Morsy's drive and pass to release Celina.

Yes, I thought I'd mentioned that Burgess coming on shored us up a touch? Also, worth noting that we was not just defensive and sitting back - he did actually get forward and support and played 1 or 2 quite nice passes.

Yes, it might have been interesting had we conceded and it had been 3-2 - as with any team - that would be nervy. I think my wider point was that it really didn't look like we would concede, which felt like a first. Bar Walton's save and that pinball moment - that was really it - we coped well - which is one of those small changes and differences to other games.

We are far from the finished article and we have to push on again.

Morsy is the catalyst for me. He looks properly settled in the side now and it's noticeable Evans looks far better alongside him. He links the defence and attack, provides a stability to the side and drives the rest of them on. We haven't had that in the middle of the park for a long, long time.

To be fair, I thought we'd get bullied off the park Tuesday night - for the first 15 to 20, we kinda did but....we did start really getting at them, our way, and imposing our game on them....and they really didn't have answer for us.

All of this. Never underestimate how far a bit of unity and spirit can take a club.

We still keep giving away silly free kicks in potentially dangerous areas. And every time We do, we still look a bit fragile from the resulting set pieces.
If we could stamp this out, it would do wonders for my nerves.....

I have also been a cook doubter, and of course I still have some doubts.

I really like the guy though, and I do think at times he has been slightly unlucky. Wycombe was superb, we were brilliant, more of that please

Sunderland have been bullied themselves by Rotherham and Pompey and Charlton and are trying to play a passing style …unlikely they will bully us .

Rotherham yes , they will try

Yes, you did actually. The ball he played to Celina was lovely, surprised a few people. Good response to being dropped.
