As America gives thanks... 07:39 - Nov 25 with 1269 views | unbelievablue | ..and I shall be, in my own way, partaking later - watching the NFL in an American bar, eating American style food, drinking American style beer - I thought it would be good to share a book recommendation on the Native peoples of North America. Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee, by Dee Brown. A brilliant book in terms of scope. Talks about tribes I'd never heard of, and tells a wide-ranging story of settler, US Govt. and military misdeeds throughout the colonisation and expansion process. My favourite part is that each chapter starts with a chronology of the year in discussion, situating the local events among global ones, which gives a fascinating reference point and reminds us how relatively recently many of these tragedies took place. https://www.wob.com/en-gb/books/dee-brown/bury-my-heart-at-wounded-knee/97800995

WOB is great and I like how their business model is very much 'stick it to Amazon'. That said, the Audible version is excellent as it is narrated by the great Grover Gardner.

On the 'stick it to Amazon' issue, I recently decided to do the decent thing and get a couple of books that are not yet available through the library from a local bookshop. In each case the book was two quid more expensive than Amazon but there was no delivery charge or minimum order value, no sneaking in a subscription to Amazon Prime under the radar to worry about. Guy behind the counter then tears off a voucher from a book of the things and hands it to me with a 'you may find this useful'. So I've logged on to the National Book Token website and got a fiver off my purchase when I go in to collect it, i.e. using the local bookshop has turned out to be a quid cheaper than Amazon.

For Ipswich based types I also noticed a new independent bookshop on Dial Lane the other day - am trying to go there and Waterstones rather than using Amazon.

As America gives thanks... on 14:21 - Nov 25 with 1015 views | jeera | Bought that a while ago and it's been sitting on the shelf. I need to start that but put it off as someone posted on here how hard going it is in places. Given I'd just completed another book containing some particularly violent and upsetting chapters I thought I'd break it up with some lighter stuff in between. I want to make a start on it soon as it does seem to come highly recommended all round. So much for all those Westerns I watched as a kid huh?

Mentioned it a few times on here before but abebooks.co.uk is my go-to. Basically a network of indpendent and second-hand book shops in the UK and elsewhere. Can find some absolute steals.

Sorry to break this to you but Abe is one of Amazon's subsidiaries and has been for twelve years now: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AbeBooks

OK, I'm going to have to ask you to sit down and breathe deeply for a few minutes before I tell you the technicality that prevents Santa being an Amazon employee...

I started using bookshop.org a while back when wanting to buy online: https://uk.bookshop.org/pages/about Their prices are comparable to Amazon on a lot of books, I’ve found some cheaper and some slightly more expensive. Can’t beat going into a local independent book shop and picking something up but this has been a good alternative when buying online. [Post edited 25 Nov 2021 16:45]
