This Rugby no promotion news 14:23 - Mar 2 with 886 views | hype313 | Because you need a stadium that holds 10,001 (Is Wenger now at the RFU..) is madness, Surely by trying to expand it's audience you need promotion and relegation to make it more exciting, look at Exeter, people love a rags to riches story and now it's a closed shop. People keep saying Newcastle need to be ringfenced to grow the sport in the NE, but I watched the Newcastle highlights the other night and they had one man and his dog watching, and 20 years ago they signed the most marketable player on the planet and it didn't grow the fanbase, London Irish average 4,500, but they are fine because the play in a stadium that holds 24k and is the most horrific ground to get in and out of. Old boys club, yet again. [Post edited 2 Mar 2022 14:23]

A sensible option would be to waive that for the first year after promotion so the club can at least justify the spend or even arrange a groundshare with a neighbouring football club. The odd thing is that the English pyramid is massive as well as the RFU take so there’s money and the potential market to support and promote a stronger second tier. And no need to ring fence the Premiership even by default. Completely different to Wales, Scotland and Ireland where the sport is much, much smaller and pro teams need to be secured. The French Top14 is still a much richer league and that’s probably a lot to do with strong tiers below.

The thing is Doncaster can use the Eco power stadium if they went up and Ealing's ground holds 4k but has the capacity to go higher if they went up. it just reeks of Carling's quote years ago "57 old farts running the show"

You’re probably right. It does feel like they’re looking out for what they perceive as bigger interests when the sporting values *should* be paramount.

I wouldn't be surprised if there were a few clubs in the Premier League that would love it if that was ringfenced....

I meant the Football PL! But yes, Bath would be over the moon. Although I do have a soft spot for them, only because going to The Rec is one of the last joys of stadia we have in this country, and a number of decent pubs to frequent before and after.

Oops! Yeah, probably half of them at least. I reckon it suits the top 6 or so as relegation seems to regularly dilute the competition and keep them with the biggest share. With no promotion or relegation I imagine clubs would start to narrow the gap over uninterrupted years of sharing the pot – and they could certainly spend more as a result. Edit: And agreed on the Rec. Also I think they’d be alright if they go down, because even playing and losing so poorly their crowds have held up very well. [Post edited 2 Mar 2022 16:06]

This Rugby no promotion news on 20:12 - Mar 2 with 473 views | Clapham_Junction | The Scottish Premier League used to apply an equally nonsensical 10,000 capacity rule - stopped Falkirk getting promoted, saw some ridiculous groundshares (Caley Thistle at Aberdeen) and resulted in several clubs building grounds much larger than their fanbase to meet the criteria (I think it was one of the reasons for the demise of the original Airdrieonians). I remember several Conference clubs being denied promotion in the the Football League during the 1990s for similar reasons.
