Thompson 14:58 - Mar 6 with 2142 views | FrimleyBlue | Unsure what his future holds. But. There's a player in there. Certain situations his composure is twice that of Penney and KVY. His attacking play isn't quite as often as Penney and defensively occasionally he gives to much room for crosses.. but he is showing glimpses of what I thought we were getting when he joined.. a calm and composed fullback. Maybe this is this is the problem he's a fullback rather than wingback? But he has indeed been part of a defensive line that has kept a crazy amount of cleansheets. If there was a chance.. would you sign him in the summer?

I actually wonder how he would handle that role himself, that might suit him better

We still don't really know what McKenna's preferred set up is. McGreal/Dyer tried the 3 at the back and it suits the personnel we have in the squad. Could be a different set up next season though given a full window

I can't see it being that different You dont go from coaching prem ball playing cbs to wanting a basic flat 4 with two cbs including a hoofer. I do wonder if we may see some big bids in for wolfy and edmundson so who plays cb next season isn't a cert yet. [Post edited 6 Mar 2022 15:24]

We do have 6 clean sheets in the 8 games he's played though, so he's part of a back 5 that is functioning well. He plays so reservedly going forwards that you almost wonder whether it's under instruction. He often looks for that ball inside to Celina as his first thought which must be something they work on. I'm not sure you can have 2 donaciens. Must admit I've never seen a defender in a 3 playing like donacien. Is it something done alot in the prem? And just unique in league 1?

We seem to be trying to play PL / Championship style footie now anyway don’t we….. we’ll do well when we get promoted out of this god awful division.

Yeah it's definitely not something you see alot of at this level I said in another post. Watching Fulham yesturday and it was the first time I saw a similarity in phases of play and that we could actually hold our own. It was also interesting to see the YouTuber comments on town yesturday and that he felt we were nastier than the first game, this is definitely key for this league.

That’s a good shout actually, would be worth a go. I certainly don’t think he is right as left wing back, nowhere near dynamic enough going forwards, someone posted a heat map for a previous game and it highlighted left v right how further forward Burns is. Feels like we don’t create enough on that left side, but as others have said maybe that’s down to Edmundson not getting forward enough and being right footed.

Thompson on 20:07 - Mar 6 with 1463 views | JakeITFC | A good player for me - defends really well as a full back and is very careful and deliberate with the ball. Obviously doesn't beat men or bomb on in the style of Wes Burns on the other side, but I think when we are a side that is looking for control of games there is something to be said for somebody who looks after possession on the other flank.

Exactly. Thompson has to do an awful lot of defending during games, while Burns is largely free to stay forward and wait for the ball when our defence snuffs out an attack. Thompson has played his full part in that defensive side of our game. I like him and his overall balance as a player. Having said that, I think the LWB role would suit Penney much more than LB did. So I won’t be too worried if he comes in at any stage.

Thompson on 22:14 - Mar 6 with 1234 views | BigCommon | I'd be happy if we signed him, or re-signed him on loan ... He's made a handful of mistakes since his arrival. Far fewer than other players during the 10 odd games he's played in... We've looked so much more solid at the back. And , imo, have enough quality forward players, to be creating , enough chances in a game, without relying on one LWB to be creating loads... Games we've dropped points in under KM and since Thomson has been playing, are far more down to chances missed, rather than, lack of chances created, IMO.... Since Thomson's been playing, we've broken the record for minutes played without conceding , and are averaging 2pts plus , per game.... He'll probably be playing in a higher division than L1, next season... I really rate him... We've improved since he came here. And he's a big part of that, IMO... Our problems/possible improvements, lie further up the pitch.. In terms of ,how we can improve as a team, atm? Then, for me, Thomson is not even in that conversation....

The basis of any decent team is a good defence. If he has been part of a defence that’s kept 6 clean sheets in 8 games I’d sign him in a heartbeat. I’m sure that with a little bit of work and good coaching he can improve the attacking side of his game.

I've said it in another reply on here but I wonder if Thompson would be better off playing the left side of the back three, trying to mirror what Donacien does on the right It's not as of he's done that badly, he just isn't a natural wing back and lacks the flair of Penny or even KVY That would of course mean Edmundson coming out though and we don't really want that? I can see another poster asking if this system is more common in the Premier League, I'm not sure how common it is at all? Wilder seemed to pioneer what is an overlapping centre backs type system which we seem to be mirroring. I know Guardiola's sides had centre backs almost became midfielders when they were in control of the ball as an example but it wasn't quite the same. I know a lot of teams have reverted to 3 at the back, in part to counter the 451's & 4231's which have become popular, it's almost taken over from the 4231 which a lot of teams started playing as the favoured formation. Thompson on 06:40 - Mar 7 with 833 views | PioneerBlue | He came in having played limited regular minutes this season. He take a few games to settle but has been part of a much improved defence and his own game is coming on each game. What’s not to like? He appears to be one that is being singled out by some. Let’s look at strikers not striking before we worry about defenders keeping many x clean sheets! I would like him to stay if at all possible.

Thompson on 08:23 - Mar 7 with 726 views | franz_tyson | If we’ve got an opportunity to sign a LWB in the summer - why not go for one that suits the criteria as best as possible. One that could actually beat a full back and whip in a cross. If we sign him, then we’ve already got KVY and Penney under contract and they’re not really at the level we want for a LWB. It’s been said Thompson is a defender who’s contributed to our defence. Fair play. He’s a LB playing as a LWB and it seems to be working to an extent - but I don’t think it’s ideal. If we could get a made for measure player who could add to our attacking game on the left hand side then surely that would be an upgrade. We’ve seen mistakes from Thompson so I wouldn’t say he’s defensively rock-solid. I think the back three have helped him out at times, but I acknowledge our defensive record is good. It’s all about whether we can upgrade. In the meantime, if Thompson can put in solid performances then fine, but we should be trying to improve. If we can a few more goals and assists from the left side surely that would help us during the course of the season. And as he’s not under contract with us, we’ve got the opportunity to look further afield.
Thompson on 08:25 - Mar 7 with 722 views | jayessess | Doesn't seem like there is much chance of getting him after the Summer, but if there was I'd not be opposed to it. He's very low key, but stats show he's quietly effective - good positionally, intelligent defender, uses the ball well. No assists yet but he's our 2nd best player for chance creation (1.4/90, compared to KVY 1.2 and Penney 0.7). He completes 1 cross per game, which only our regular set piece taker Evans beats. He's top for interceptions (2.3/90, compared to KVY 0.8 and Penney 1), which tells you he reads the game well. He's very involved in our play, completing 50.4 passes per game (6th best in the squad, Penney it's just 39.2, Wes 25.3, KVY 30.8), which tells you he's good at finding space to receive and give the ball. All the chat about wanting Penney or KVY back in for their attacking contribution isn't really born out by the stats. He's a good, balanced Left Back/Left Wing Back. He's versatile, allows us to change shape. I think you'd be hard pressed to find a big upgrade on him at this level.
