Maybe, just maybe their neighbours will see the benefits from what seem incredibly sensible measures...

They won't. The tendency towards gun ownership in much of the States is pretty much unfathomably entrenched. This sort of thing, conversely/unfortunately, only emboldens the Ted Cruz types, who ply the "look at us, we're an island of freedom" line.

"These are actions that doctors, experts and police chiefs have been calling for for years and we're acting on their advice."

Not to knock this because it's a great positive move but you have to ask what on earth has taken so long? As poster above says, it's doubtful this will have a direct effect on the US but you know, it may make a greater number join the ranks of anti-guns so who knows what indirect effect it may have.

It's positive news anyway.

Gabbie Giffords' funding of gun reform candidates is more targeted (ironically) and has a bigger impact than NRA funding now.

The tide is turning.

I think those pushing for tighter gun controls should push the police chiefs line...make the argument that those responsible for law and order want tighter controls. Get middle America onside and you have a chance.

Mr Lagos, saw a tweet earlier from Adrian T of a collection of Reds fans “and an Ipswich diehard” in a Paris restaurant. Assume that was you!

Ha.

I woke up a few nights ago wondering wtf some awful noise was, before realising it was me. I'd woken myself up with my own snoring!

Unfathomably? Is that a sly reference to Bojos Imperical rebirth?

Anyway, I agree with you - the yanks really don't get irony or the fact that what they think they are supporting is against their best interests.

If you own a gun then you're a patriot - really?
If you're against gun ownership then you're un-amercun.

If you can answer Yes to all the following questions then you're a true patriot.
1. Do you own a gun?
2. Are you a Good guy who hates non-whites and Libs?
3. Do you hate paedophiles?
4. Did you marry your 14-year old cousin?

Don't believe a word I say. I'm only kidding. Or am I?

BBC news the other night reported there was a NRA convention in Austin, Texas a day or so after the last shooting nightmare.

I couldn't help thinking what a delicious, but appalling, irony it would have been if somebody had stormed in there and let loose with a semi-automatic.

Apologies if I saw it on here but someone commented that the fact that the gun lobby relies on a constitutional amendment suggests that things can be changed.

I don't believe it's about funding. It's more about the way we (I'm American) elect our congresspeople

Gerrymandering at the House of Reps level means that many Republican lawmakers are beholden to the most extreme wing of their party lest they be challenged from the right in the primary where only the most passionate vote. Gerrymandering has meant that primaries are fr more important than the actual election for many many congressmen

The way the senate is created also means that that the smaller states (which tend to be far more conservative) wield too much power there too
