All the best and good luck to him, pleased for him but he wanted to leave here so had to go when he did. People moaning saying we should’ve kept him and got that fee but would never happen whilst we are in L1, this is how it goes whilst we are here, player can progress to Championship and then on to a PL club for a big fee, or from L1 to PL but a lot smaller fee. (Not aimed at you, just saying)

Is Rice going then? surely Downes and he are too similar? (n/t) on 16:48 - Jul 7 with 1863 views | unstableblue

You're expecting Downes to drop straight into Rice's place ?

I think if the sell-on is anywhere near 20-25% as quoted we've done well. IMO an unhappy Flynn in League 1 does not put in the performances that a) get us out of the league or b) build his value to the same level he's reached now. What a f£cking move for the kid, too. Must be in absolute dreamland.

I suppose they play a lot of games.. Soucek is Rice's normal partners, and is also very high quality but a bit more advanced and creative Downes has been playing the Rice enforcer role at Swansea

Think they're paying £9m plus a further £3m in top-ups as and when. £9m is not really huge money in Premier League terms these days!

But if we had kept him we could be in the championship now. We'll never know but we as a club and fans have to accept some youths need time to develop. If I had a choice of Morsy or Downes last season, 100% it would have been Downes. Easy to saying I know but if we kept him I'm sure we would have been promoted.

That’s really not how they play though, in the past year at least. Both are primarily holding players but Rice has been far more in the box-to-box with Soucek sitting, and then the likes of Fornals/Lanzini/Benrahma in more advanced roles Plus as others have pointed out Downes almost certainly won’t be displacing anyone for now anyway, just used as a squad option, probably the primary backup for both [Post edited 7 Jul 2022 19:56]

It could be a cracking bargain for them. Swansea paid about £16m for Sam Clucas and he was crap. I just hope he gets the game time and the move doesn’t stall his development.
