I understand your point and in usual circumstances, I'd probably agree. I don't think it matters how media savvy the new PM is, or what they say to get the members back on side - they've cocked up so massively that they are not going to be able to fix this while pushing their populist policies. I think Sunak didn't win because a good number of the Tory members were racially prejudiced or they felt that voters overall (especially in the north) weren't ready for an ethnic minority PM. The party might still choose him, but with the disastrous Truss mini budget, the Red Wall is set to return. The housing market is also set to crash, which will be a death knell for the Tories in the South East. They've been doing everything possible to prop up the market; once that fails, as it surely will, the crash will be even bigger. | |

It was the huge rise in mortgage costs that did for Major. He was behind in the polls and never really caught up.
Voters may express a concern, but it is only when it really hits them in the pockets that counts, and the knowledge that interest rate rises are in part down to the mini budget
With the worst still to come as a very large number of people will lose their homes
Major was not necessarily unpopular, but Black Monday was held against him for his whole 5 years, and constant infighting left the Tories looking a divided party, more concerned with infighting than governing.....much as now
