Rishi is the best of a bad bunch. He was the right pick 6 weeks ago and I dare say wouldn't have allowed the car crash mini budget to have taken place. He's demonstrated more foresight than the rest of them put together.

....out of the equation then he should walk it. But if they end up going to the members he may struggle, in which case Penny could sneak through.

Just as Mars colliding with earth might cause an exolosThe bloated cook is in the Caribean, and is likley to seek asylum As to the current situation it replicates the Tories generational flare up. What did for Major was the all too obvious internal party divisions. These will again fester in the coming months while the country freezes, struggles to pay the mortgage and pay the bills. As the GE is lost, there efforts will be directed towards controlling the party

Agreed but he can't command the party. If I were him I'd step back and wait for next time. They are all damaged goods RN, anyone in the Tory party with ambition should disassociate as much as possible for now

Going to be Mordaunt on 14:29 - Oct 20 with 2894 views | SlippinJimmyJuan | I understand your point and in usual circumstances, I'd probably agree. I don't think it matters how media savvy the new PM is, or what they say to get the members back on side - they've cocked up so massively that they are not going to be able to fix this while pushing their populist policies. They have been exposed and they don't have any tricks left. It's just a matter of when.

Yes, in 1992, despite the polls' prediction of a Labour win. However, he failed to heal the party's divisions over Europe & introduced umpteen unpopular tax rises & was crushed in 1997. Sound familiar?

Going to be Mordaunt on 14:41 - Oct 20 with 2763 views | EastTownBlue | There was quite a briefing to the media against her last time to enable Truss to finish in the final two. I'm sure that will now all be forgotten about in this current mess. [Post edited 20 Oct 2022 15:01]

Rishi was quite happy to prop up the open corruption, bigotry, incompetence, etc, etc of the Johnson regime right up until it didn't suit him anymore. He's not so much the 'best' as 'maybe one of the least worst'.

Your comment assumes a degree of common sense . He was the obvious choice last time didn’t do him any good. My guess is it will be stitched up behind closed doors and only one candidate will hit 100 mark. If there is a ballot could between Sunak & Johnson.

I think Sunak didn't win because a good number of the Tory members were racially prejudiced or they felt that voters overall (especially in the north) weren't ready for an ethnic minority PM. The party might still choose him, but with the disastrous Truss mini budget, the Red Wall is set to return. The housing market is also set to crash, which will be a death knell for the Tories in the South East. They've been doing everything possible to prop up the market; once that fails, as it surely will, the crash will be even bigger.

Going to be Mordaunt on 20:12 - Oct 20 with 2255 views | Ryorry | Well known & respected broadcaster, can't recall her name, said on BBC R4 at teatime she didn't think that likely - most voters have shown in the past that their memories do stretch back at least 2 years, and they don't forgive messes as deep & as widepread as the ones we're seeing now.

If "Sunak didn't win because a good number of the Tory members were racially prejudiced" then how come BAME Tory Kemi Badenoch constantly topped the members poll during the leadership election? Square that circle please.

It was the huge rise in mortgage costs that did for Major. He was behind in the polls and never really caught up. Voters may express a concern, but it is only when it really hits them in the pockets that counts, and the knowledge that interest rate rises are in part down to the mini budget With the worst still to come as a very large number of people will lose their homes Major was not necessarily unpopular, but Black Monday was held against him for his whole 5 years, and constant infighting left the Tories looking a divided party, more concerned with infighting than governing.....much as now It can only be a damage limitation whoever they select as leader https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2022/oct/20/boris-johnson-considering-runni
