Liverpool eh. Visited it recently and was suitably unimpressed. Not that that's the fault of the occupants.
Mixed feelings on this. On the one hand, good on them. They're unashamedly republican/anti-monarchist, which pretty much chimes with my views on the matter, and they're protesting what they see as an establishment intrusion into their fandom. I also really, really hate the hate-speech they STILL get about Hillsborough, in spite of all of the evidence to the contrary, so tend to side with them by default.
On the other hand, there is an 'us against everyone' arrogance to large parts of their fanbase and the city itself which, although I disagree about the 'victimhood' label, absolutely traverses into 'isolationism', to borrow a political phrase. It's one of those 'if I was brought up there as a dyed in the wool scouser/Liverpool fan, I'd love it and love being a part of it, but I'm not so it p!sses me off' things.
I'm also all for a bit more of a zen approach to these things. Shrug and move on. Ignore the anthem and get stuck right in to YNWA afterwards? Meh, who knows.
