I'm not saying tonight is season defining, but I think we'll know a lot more 10:09 - Oct 3 with 2311 viewsunstableblue

..... about our credentials come the final whistle

Firstly the home crowd really need to turn up tonight.. back the boys fully, be the 12th man.. we're really not going to have it all our own way.. and this is not time for fans to retreat into their shells.. which can be a blue army trait.

Obviously tonight's results won't define the season... and our start has been incredible.. but we were flat Saturday and Moore worked out a plan to nullify us. Morsy's return will be a big boost, but I do feel Hull are going to really test us and there could be goals again.

Can McKenna win the tactical battle and can the players shrug off the weekend? we'll need a hell of a lot more from Burns and Chaplin and we have to own central midfield.

Exciting under the lights.

Interesting one tonight – feels like a draw on paper so let's hope we manage at least that. Think Hull are a bit of a marker in terms of what'll be needed for a sustained top-six challenge so living with them would be a very good sign and take us to the 10-game mark nicely.

Think the point about Moore having a plan to nullify us is an interesting one. Huddersfield are 20th in the division for possession, averaging 40.6%, Hull are 7th, averaging 55.6%, whilst we're 13th (49.7%).

Other games we've had against low possession sides include QPR and Cardiff (both tougher than expected), other games against high possession Southampton, Blackburn, Stoke (all easier than expected). Is there a case that the way Hull plays suits us more than Huddersfield's style?

I think there's certainly a case that we're better suited to picking off teams who come and play. Huddersfield's approach was to nullify us first and worry about getting the ball forward after. The better teams look to impose themselves on us first, which leaves the gaps for us to exploit.

We're finding out a lot each game really. Each have been different challenges. Leeds was a real learning experience about how to handle players with much higher individual quality levels. We've had some tests of character. Tests of having to deal with a high press with teams that play on the front foot (Blackburn), or more defensive set ups that play with a block, or one-to-one markups like against Huddersfield.

The variety between the different opponents is making each game a lot more interesting than last season already.

I'm looking forward to it. I've no idea how it will go, but Hull have started pretty well so it will be a challenge. We've stood up to all the challenges so far though, so fingers crossed we'll have another good night.

Going to be an interesting game tonight.

Hull have spent fairly big (5m on one winger) as well as gone fairly heavy in PL loans from top clubs as well as Twine from Burnley.

Its got 3-2 or 0-0 written all over it..

I do think our defence will have a point to prove at home, after Blackburn and Leeds

What we're really finding out in many of the games you mention, is what it's like to play against such higher calibre players.. and as Stokie points out below Hull definitely fall into that bracket

I watched Blackburn v Leicester, some were bemoaning the match.. but I thought the individual player quality really stood out.

A win tonight would be a big statement in my mind

Hull definitely a marker..

Young manager who seems to be making the grade, good quality football and a high quality squad.. need to make the home advantage count

Hull fans in general pretty confident they'll get a result tonight.

"They’re a promoted side, we are better than them.

Anything less than a win isn’t good enough."

Hmm.

What do the players need to shrug off from the weekend?

Assume you were also there. But that was a below par, and low energy performance, with mistakes across the pitch, and key players not giving their best - Chaplin, Burns, Evans. But still had some gritty elements to take forward.

So they need to shrug off some of the low energy and error prone play if the form is to continue. I’m not sure the central midfield selection allowed us to be at our best.

As McKenna stated:

“I didn’t think it was a good game in terms of quality”

“we never really managed to get momentum in the game. We made too many mistakes in the first half to give them momentum, which was going to be a big part of today.”

“Certainly there are parts of the team and the group that are still relatively inexperienced at this level and coming here to an atmosphere like that and a game in that context, that will be something that we can learn from and we’ll be stronger for”

Shrug off the poor performance/energy, take the good gritty bits forward, and learn to be better at the things we can improve. As Stuart Watson stated “ITFC not at their fluent best”… “but they found a way to dig something out of the game”

I know there’s still a half to go, but I wonder how they’re feeling about being totally schooled so far?
