It seems they are trying to make themselves integral in the region through any means possible. The fact that Iran seems to be so unstable (and destabilising) is a massive issue that seems to just rumble on in the background.
Presumably the sportswashing by themselves and Saudi is a proxy-war/competition that will carry on whilst we still focus on Israel and they will try to position themselves as an alternative for us to trade with etc.
