I've been to the Bernabeu a few times as I have some family there. It's an incredible structure but it has a vast and disconnected feel from the game in my view. It's like a hybrid of TV and real life. Maybe because the ground is dozens of very small blocks of fans. There are only a couple of proper tribunes.
There are some tremendous fan bases in Spain. Real Madrid are not one of them, in my view. |  |

Spanish football fans rarely attend their teams’ away games. Even in derby games, and certainly not for the Madrid/ Barca games.
I have lived in Madrid twice many years ago and was a regular visitor to the Bernabeu. In those days the capacity was 125,000. It was spectacular. |  | | |

Not a patch on the carbon footprint from all the travel, which will only get worse as leagues like the Champions League are expanded. I’ve always been surprised that it never gets a mention. |  |
