Southgate suddenly feels like yesterdays man 19:29 - Jun 20 with 1478 views | ghostofescobar | And I will be the first to admit that I have been a Southgate fan in his England role in the past. But having watch Town at close quarters in the past two years, it’s made me realise (no, reinforced) how advanced KM is in his style of football. Southgate is no risk football, KM is all risk. High risk, high rewards. Englands style suddenly feels quite old fashioned. Football now seems high tempo, England aren’t. And it isn’t as though we don’t have the players.

His always been like that. I would like a Klopp or a exciting manager nobody under 40
Southgate suddenly feels like yesterdays man on 19:39 - Jun 20 with 1348 views | Swansea_Blue | His teams came out of the blocks flying in his early days and we got excited about a false dawn. He’s getting more conservative with age though (don’t a lot?). You’re right. England feel dated. It’s often about the press these days and playing on the front foot. Southgate is stuck in ‘keep it tight at the back and maybe nick one’ mode. It’s a bit like Pulis’ Stoke, but without a long ball and long throw strategy. It’s currently feeling like a waste of the attacking talent at his disposal. But, still likely to qualify top of group. Based on what we’ve seen so far though Germany are the complete package, Italy will be too savvy, France too good individually and Spain too mobile for us. I’ll be amazed if we make the final (but who knows - maybe it’s the year for dull pragmatism).

Dull, yes, but it's not even really pragmatic. If we were going to play a defensive game with the occasional break forward, we ought to have organised and drilled for that. Rather than just wandering onto the pitch with only the vaguest idea of what each other were supposed to be doing.

Yes, that’s fair. Just disorganised then.

Crab football or whisper it, perhaps our footballers are not that good. Champions league, even with all the foreign players none of our teams progressed. Or is it the coach preventing gifted players playing? Not as attractive football as the Town. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Lots of optimistic English gamblers, presumably. With a dash of journalistic hubris.

I do sometimes wonder if some of them are being carried a bit in their clubs. There aren’t that many who are leaders in their clubs. Man C and Liverpool players all have better players/leaders around them, for example (Rodri, De Bruyne, van Dijk, etc.). Not that our players are bad of course. We see examples of their individual qualities every week, until they pull on an England shirt at a tournament. So I think it’s largely Southgate’s mindset that he imparts on them. Maybe, but that rabble looked like a load of raffle ticket winners from the Dog and Duck after winning the turn out for England competition.
