Quick match thoughts - Auxerre 0 Ipswich 3 19:01 - Aug 2 with 1503 viewsunstableblue

Here we go

1) looked perfect conditions for our final pre-season game
2) maybe 100-200 away blues watching our new boys in their red
3) the Auxerre ultras certainly gave some atmosphere behind the goal
4) and this certainly didn’t feel like a friendly it was a contest, a lot of physicality
5) Auxerre a good level but lacked some cutting edge, but it felt like a league game
6) unfortunately the niggly nature of the game led to what looked bad knocks to Townsend and Philogene
7) town started to get on top early and there were notable performances across the team
8) I really liked our central midfield, azor especially, but Taylor had some great passing moments
9) azor is a big upgrade for me… some of his passing is on the edge, but it seems to work
10) Philogene was a bit mixed
11) Jack Clarke was outstanding and my MOTM
12) also standout were greaves and OShea, the former hull man having a standout pre season and got a lovely headed goal, coming from Clarke winning a free kick in a dangerous area and then a delightful young free kick
13) Hirst opener was a lovely touch
14) Johnson was Ok, not brilliant
15) thought palmer was a bit indecisive at times, got a rollicking from our captain
16) we got a bit disjointed after all the subs on 70, but Ali goal really good especially a moment from azor
17) thought Broadhead failed to get going, Ogbene some moments. I like barbrook.

Some promising elements to our performance against a good team, a great test before the rigours of Brum. Shame about the injuries.

Let’s get some more bodies in… and DO THE FECKIN LEAGUE

I thought Auxerre were pretty poor all round but completely hopeless in attack. Maybe they took it more as a regular pre-season game where we were on it a lot more being the last game before the league starts.

The injuries to me looked my like muscle strain type rather than physical knocks but hard to tell.

I liked the look of Azor but Taylor was a mixed bag. Greaves impressed me too as did JC.

So it will be interesting to see how we fare against better championship forwards

(Sound like we leaked some goals against Weat Ham and Posh? Behind closed doors)

I thought for half the first half Auxerre gave quite a good account of themselves in terms of energy, closing and passing. Will be better than many teams we face this term, and to give us a real test they were going in to tackles quite hard.

Auxerre's first XI gave us some real challenges, with pace and strength. But they didn't really threaten our goal.

From minute 70, our second XI was vastly superior against their's.

I am not quite convinced by us yet, but it has been a superb set of preseason results and performances.

We were really good yesterday. I think the french commentators did pretty poor dell boy impressions though.
Seriously though we were great. Glad for Ali getting that goal, his first touch to do the defender was excellent. He will be of great importance to us next season. I also like how Azor can pick a pass through the middle of the pitch. Something we just didn't do enough of last year. Our base is very good for this term and a couple of additions will really increase our worth. Looking forward to Friday. 🙄

Great post

I also enjoyed the French commentators and how they pronounced Town player names - Jorgues ‘Irst

I don’t think yesterday attacking and defending prowess is getting the plaudits it deserves

We were strong!

Totally agree on progressive passing through the middle

Azror was brilliant before Ali goal and actually Taylor fed Hirst twice both for goals, one offside

We lacked this last season

I sort of get what you mean

For me the centre backs to central midfield is working and the wide players to Hirst - although Philogene now out

We need Davis… that was convincing me in pre-season

Young has suddenly become very important

Szmodics needs to come alive at Brum
