It doesn't take much to confuse me ...transfers! 18:20 - Jun 27 with 2830 viewsTwoKnightsInIpswich

After KM left, Ashton said "we were down the road on a number of transfers but needed a new manager onboard before finalising" (paraphrasing it)

At GOM presser, he said "We need to strengthen and would comb the world for the right players but, existing players, would be given a fair crack of the whip" (paraphrasing again).

My understand players are not back till this week! Surely "deals in process" won't wait for players to meet GON and be evaluated by him! Likewise, if we are waiting for a squad evaluation will we miss out on potential signings?

I still believe we need a couple of quality marquee signings in early to show intent and encourage a higher calibre of potential signings! Would love to see us strengthen midfield with Harvey Elliot of Lucas Bergvall, and then an experienced defender like John Stones.

I wonder if we are now waiting for the 1st July, to move the purchases into the next footballing calendar year. Helps with PSR or whatever it is now called.

It's an interesting one for sure.

For me it points towards the setup now being one where players are identified and bought for the Head Coach by the recruitment team. That would explain deals being progressed prior to the appointment of O'Neil.

It would also, perhaps, give some further explanation for O'Neil's appointment, given that he will certainly have worked under a similar setup at Wolves.

Possibly. But I thought we had quite a bit of room before 1 July. Although perhaps it’s nominal in the scheme of things

In any event we need to learn from last season where we left it all very late in te day. Can’t afford to do that. Kick off in less than two months. That time will fly by.

Lot of logic there, my best guess is that key areas of the squad that need strengthening have already been identified regardless of G O'N assessing the squad. It is a guess though!

As for being confused, well I shouldn't worry, I'm still trying to work out the answer to a puzzle I was given about 60 years ago, when someone drew a big chalk circle round me on the pavement and asked me to stand in the corner :)

There are just obvious places we will buy/strengthen that don't need GON to evaluate the players to make decisions so there will be some things that can move with his sign off now.

Strikers, CM, RW, GK are all pretty obvious areas we will sign players. Other than that those he may want to review what's in the building.

Now called SCR, and it makes no difference with transfers in, as the costs are pro rata across the year.

Deals before 30th June? by SuffolkPunchFC 24 Jun 14:46
Player amortisation costs are accounted for on a pro rata basis, so any signings in the last few weeks of the season are going to see only 3-5% of the annual amortisation cost appearing in the 25/26 accounts, and 95-97% in 26/27. That's like £200k saved from the 26/27 SCR budget - totally insignificant (0.05% of our SCR headroom - and yes, that's 1/20th of a percent).

We've currently only got 18 players under contract who we actually used in the league last season, we're probably fine to add a few without worrying about over-shooting on numbers.

Didn't Ashton identify and buy players when he was at Bristol? And wasnt this a bone of contention amongst Bristol fans, because they accused him of spending unwisely, paying high fees for players?

If you're saying that he will want to evaluate some, then, whatever general fan opinion might be, we have two at RW, in the building, as you put it, in Sindre and McAteer, who weren't cheap and would surely fall into your GoN having a look at them bracket.

But was that true. We have done very well with transfers in the past few years.

We did alright in L1 and the Championship.

Our PL acquisitions were appalling as an attempt to stay up, regardless of how they've fared since relegation.

Retrospectively they were woefully short.

However, had Muric turned out as well as he has for Sassuolo, Kalvin Phillips been what Ross Barkley was for Luton, and Broja been fit, got over the line and been better than Delap we would have made a proper go of it. It isn't always easy to predict which signings will or won't work out.

Something is very obvious, though: we need 2 good strikers and a quality central midfielder in. The difficulty is identifying them and getting the deals over the line.

MA shouldn't be within a country mile of identifying players. That's what the recruitment team is for. Doing the wheeling and dealing sure, that's his job. If he is anywhere near it, something has gone very wrong.

Most contracts end on 30th June. Although down the line with various deals they were always going to be subject to new managers approval. GON will also have players he might want to sign who aren’t on that list and they will need to be approved by MC/MA. What we don’t want is to sign players GON doesn’t want. We also don’t know which of the current squad he wants to keep or sell. I assume over the last few days he has been spending any spare time looking at recruitment. GON will know the type of player who can adapt to fit his system and who won’t. I’m still expecting at least one goalie to leave plus Button de registered. Ogbene, Szmodics, H. Clarke, Wes (sadly), Humphreys, Al-Hamadi and maybe one or two others to leave. Not sure Mehmeti is PL quality and is Nunez up to it injury wise?

Quite agree with you on this. But I think that 1st PL promotion actually caught us out. I dont think it was expected and therefore we weren't ready. Once promoted we no longer had access to Brightons recruitment matrix/ data, and I think Mckenna and Ashton were forced to go it alone. I dont think we even had a particularly well developed recruitment department at that time. But there does seem to be a fair few of players or staff with previous connections with Ashton, at his previous clubs...even our current manager. History shows people tend to go with what (or who) they know, as its viewed as less risky...

This summers recruitment feels ( if rumours can be believed) like we are looking much further afield. A move I welcome. Fingers crossed 🤞 eh!
