This made me giggle a bit more than I should have. FB Edition. 12:07 - Aug 18 with 1805 viewsartsbossbeard

What I've done with my week off:

1. apply a coat of white emulsion to a barbie pink wall.

2. apply a coat of white emulsion to a slightly less barbie pink wall.

3. apply a coat of white emulsion to a slightly less barbie pink wall.

4. Go to Wilkos for more white emulsion

5. Never paint ever again

Please note: prior to hitting the post button, I've double checked for anything that could be construed as "Anti Semitic" and to the best of my knowledge it isn't. Anything deemed to be of a Xenophobic nature is therefore purely accidental or down to your own misconstruing.

When I moved house a few years back, our house was covered in crap coloured paint that I had to get rid of - every wall took about 3 coats.

The worst one was the lounge, which took 5 coats on a back wall - my missus had buggared off to get lunch and came back 3 hours later with a crusty sandwich and some wallpaper for that wall - wasn't best pleased!

What's the gist of the OP? I just glossed over it.

Hint from a decorator - with white emulsion, you get what you pay for. A decent brand - Johnstones, Leyland, Dulux, Crown - will give you much better coverage then the value/own-brand ones (which are made by the same people, but with less "body").

Having said that, for a really strong colour like that, I would expect it to take 3 to 4 coats before it's completely gone.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

I always buy from Dulux trade centres rather than the usual retailers.

....is it a myth that the paint is thicker from the trade stores?

When RKD was growing up he had this mad idea that he wanted Barnet as a second team so I painted his bedroom black and orange. I haven't even attempted to re paint the room as I know I won't be able to unblack the black. Two things have added insult to injury.

1/ He eventually lived in Barnet and now realises what a hole it is and has turned his back on them.

2/ He has moved back home but decided on living in a non Barnet bedroom.

Got all this to come in the next few months as the purchase of our first house is set to go through, and plenty of decorating to be done!

You may think I am talking sh1te but can I offer you some advice.

Find somewhere else to stay and paint it before you move in.

Not as such, but the trade stuff flows better than the retail (doesn't fall out of the tin in a single gelatinous blob), thus it goes on much easier and more evenly with a roller.

Cheers LL, but already one step ahead and that's what me and the missus are going to do anyway. To be honest, it's a bit of a project, new bathroom, new upstairs windows, redecorating throughout.

Were hoping to get all the main rooms done by Xmas so we can move in (living room, bathroom, windows, and main bedroom) ... then probably look to do the spare bedrooms and halls, stairs and landing next year.

We'll both be staying at our parents still, but would rather that then live in a cr*p hole for a few months! & easier for the tradesmen to not have us about in their way either!

Good advice. Easier to decorate when empty, too (especially if no carpets).

You're in big trouble, Clive.

We did that - we moved in to an ex-rented house and as the tenants had already moved out, the couple we were buying from let us in before we completed so we could decorate.
Saved a hell of a lot of hassle.
