It's remarkable precisely because it bucks the trend and doesn't happen often. Nobody has ever said it's impossible to outperform your budget, in fact we've done it in 4 of the last 5 seasons (including this one), but to do so drastically is not easy. There's lots of reasons why, the odd outlier aside, league position often correlates with money spent. But no doubt Dyche has done a fine job, they've built steadily and the stability they have helps. Some of our numbskulls would have sacked him after losing to Lincoln mind you.

im pretty sure the "credit in the bank" at being an established prem team would have made losing to Lincoln slightly easier to take.
finishing 16th in the championship and playing poorly all season doesn't have the same ring to it

Also shows the value in evolving your squad and reinvesting your sales. Burnley have actually spent £95M over the course of the last 3 years, one of which was in the Championship (£23M)

I wouldn't even bother replying to it. No point. If they don't know that then they never will. A completely different situation to us, and a completely different game.

Outstanding achievement but does it follow that the 95% who don't manage it are incompetent?

This is the thing. It's the very definition of being the exception that proves the rule and yet people take that exception as being typical and use it as some kind of benchmark. Numbskulls gonna numbskull.

Is Dyche a genius?

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!

net spend is such a disingenuous phrase these days. Liverpool's net spend is highly distorted by selling Coutinho for instance, just as ours was by selling Mings.

This.

See us 2000/01.

See Huddersfield last year.

Various examples of teams punching. See Leicester winning the league.

See Brentford / PNE / Millwall this season.

Do you really want me to flip it and do a massive list which would take up a load of text to do the other side of the coin?

What are you trying to point out here - that a good manager can get a team to a position in the league higher than their budget should dictate?
