If we had a good manager and a good youth system..... 18:26 - Apr 19 with 2339 views | Trequartista | ....could we reach the Premier League and survive? A lot of talk that times have changed, but the numbers are just inflation, it's the level of player that you can attract that is significant. Here's our 78- 81 squad that became one of the best in Europe, with the level they were playing at when we acquired them, bought by and improved by Bobby Robson or developed from our superb youth scheme. Tell me from this list which level of player we couldn't attract now? Paul Cooper Premier League Reserve Goalkeeper George Burley Youth Mick Mills Championship Youth Team Brian Talbot Youth Frans Thijssen Mid-Table Eredivisie, 4 caps Russell Osman Youth Terry Butcher Youth Kevin Beattie Youth Allan Hunter League One Roger Osborne Grundisburgh John Wark Youth Arnold Muhren Mid-Table Eredivisie, 1 cap Paul Mariner Relegation bound Championship Team Alan Brazil Youth Trevor Whymark Diss Town Eric Gates Youth Clive Woods Youth

If we had a good manager and a good youth system..... on 18:32 - Apr 19 with 2324 views | SpruceMoose | I guess the youths would all be snapped up after their first season and spend their careers in the Chelsea reserves on 50 grand a week. [Post edited 19 Apr 2018 18:32]

I think that's probably the biggest obstacle. The majority of those youth players came from Northern England and Scotland. I'm not sure you're even allowed to take them on nowadays. The non-youth signings are certainly not prohibitive though.

Nice provocation. We took youths seriously, had great national scouting, had a world class man manager. We’re replicating a lot of that. The tough thing is keeping players: freedom of movement is so different.
If we had a good manager and a good youth system..... on 22:35 - Apr 19 with 2119 views | Nthsuffolkblue | We would never manage to sign a Premier League reserve goalkeeper now they have one on the bench every match. That said, in Bart we already have one that is good enough to be one. A good post. Youth system and developing players has got to be our route. Since Klug has returned we seem to be doing this again.

We look to have a good batch coming through provided they can stay fit Hopefully a change in style and approach will help accelerate their development Folami has looked promising, Dozzell and Emmanuel will return Are any others on the verge of bigger things?

If we had a good manager and a good youth system..... on 03:57 - Apr 20 with 1989 views | harlingblue | We are awaiting a new manager, let's hope that it is a good one that is prepared to give youth a chance. Our scouting system is something to be looked at, seems obsessed with an Irish connection, a European scout is a must? In Brian Klug and his youth development team, I have great faith. If we ever make The Premiership, we would be a yo yo team, but would at least benefit from the parachute payment. If wisely used, we could consolidate as a club.

If we had a good manager and a good youth system..... on 08:05 - Apr 20 with 1871 views | Herbivore | If you think the money in the game now is just inflation and if you think that's all that's changed in the last 35-40 years then you're not living in the real world. [Post edited 20 Apr 2018 8:13]

And we only have the Academy funded at the record levels it is today because of Evans. Booooo!
If we had a good manager and a good youth system..... on 08:23 - Apr 20 with 1846 views | Steve_M | The thing that has changed totally is the money in the top division and the subsequent ability of clubs to have massive squads. As a result fewer players are prepared to drop down a division for regular football than even in the 90s - think Cundy, Clapham - and end up on a succession of season long loans. Can we make more use of the youth team than we have done recently? Yes and that is improving again after the first few years of Evans when it clearly wasn't a priority for the club. And then relegated clubs, or those with new ownership, spend a fortune in this division so we're improving to stay in a similar relative position - one with an outside chance of the play-offs if a season goes well.

If we had a good manager and a good youth system..... on 08:49 - Apr 20 with 1808 views | itfcjoe | The main difference now is that the top league is a world league and the 2nd tier is going that way too. If clubs were limited to 2-3 foreigners then building a squad like that would have a chance, but nowadays you need more to compete as the levels are higher.
