What's striking is how willing the authorities at the time were to take on large infrastructure projects. Imagine bulldozing half the buildings on St Mathews Street now to double the width of the road.

Pronouns: He/Him/His. "Imagine being a heterosexual white male in Britain at this moment. How bad is that. Everything you say is racist, everything you say is homophobic. The Woke community have really f****d this country."
Poll: Selectamod

life pre-internet was much simpler. No public opposition to speak of, just an occasional letter to the Star from 'disgusted, intut, from chantry"

The first you'd know about it is when you got home from work and there was a shiny new Blockbuster Video where your house used to be.

I worked for a Ships Agency on Cliff Quay from 1973-1981 so a lot of those photos in and around the docks are as I remember it.

Thanks for posting.

While I’m an enthusiast of Mid Century Modern building, some lovely buildings were lost in the 60’s, wealthy merchants houses in Foundation Street for example, which would be heavily protected now. Has anyone seen the plan for the ring road around town Center in mid 60’s. It carved through St Nicholas St, but was stopped at the 11th hour, hence the bend to the right at the Willis building at Cromwell Square.

Can’t see many Polish shops which is funny because it’s said we’ve always been a nation of immigrants!!

I remember Franciscan Way going straight on through what is now Cromwell Square car park.

Apparently a small section of the ring road was built and it still present within the grounds of the Foundation Lane car park

Shoes were notoriously unpolished in the 60s. It was the age of suede, and many shoeshiners starved or turned to shining the heads of well to do bald gentlemen in order to make ends meet.

Bulldozing that street is not a bad idea though
