If there are to be any benefits of Brexit (I know, I know) one may be that we finally begin to reverse the trend of declining food self-sufficiency. It is now at 60% - its lowest in decades. Of course much of this is to do with changing tastes, but a drive to produce more of our own food would encourage more seasonal eating habits and reduce food miles on average.

Then again, it won't happen and food will just get more expensive.

So a warning from two non-political bodies is project fear? Ok...

It’s ok though, as Corbyn has been in talks today threatening the EU that our no deal stance is real

As equally bad for Ireland. That's why there will be a deal.

In fact there is a deal and anyone who votes against it pushes us closer to no deal.

Warning of 40% tariffs on food if we go the “no deal” Brexit route on 15:12 - Feb 21 with 3007 viewsuefacup81

I saw a comment yesterday (maybe even on here).

Is this necessarily a bad thing?

With climate change etc., food miles are a very real thing, and our demand that everything be available, whether it is in season or not, leads to food being flown tens of thousands of miles purely because it's out of season in the UK.

We should, Brexit or not, be eating more local produce, both for the sake of the planet and the sake of British farmers. If it takes New Zealand lamb being significantly more expensive than Welsh lamb, then so be it.

It will hit the poorest hardest, which should focus some minds.

This bit sums up our reliance on imports, which won’t happen quickly, if at all:

The scheduled withdrawal on 29 March comes at a time in the year when the UK imports a lot of fresh, out-of-season, produce — 90% of the lettuce consumed in Britain, 80% of tomatoes and 70% of soft fruits come from, or arrive via, Europe.

Well no deal is the default position if we don't vote for the deal on offer.

Really? Ive not seen that. Is the man who refused to talk until the only negotiating lever we had (i.e. no deal) was categorically taken off the table, now using that negotiating lever?

Think I read somewhere that Turkey is the only country self sufficient in food.

Ha Ha, its an article in the guardian, typical left wing propaganda. We can if we wish put zero tariffs on, so things will be cheaper. Why don't the people on here ask where all the tariffs that we collect from the rest of the world goes to. It amounts to around £18 billion a year, and guess what we hand it all over to the EU to spend. Just think how much better things will be when we leave, extra money for the NHS, more for the unemployed, disabled and retired folks, whats not to like?

Cue the people that know everything!
