Not ours, but other clubs in league 1. Quite a few of these clubs seem to be going into the summer with only a handful of players on their books.

Granted players will sign up later in the summer, but it seems like there are a lot of journeymen players at league 1 and 2 level who switch clubs every 1 or 2 years.

Wasn't this what PH said about contracts? You decide what you want to do at the end of a season, renewing contracts a year before they are due to expire is unheard of.

Then I looked at who was staying and there are quite a few clubs who seem to rely on players who are 30+

Yeah it comes down to money.

Clubs lower down can't afford to have players on long deals.

Yeah, which will be why we've lost Knudsen on a free when we could have got a £1m+ fee last Summer. Top work again Evans and Hurst.

I think Jonas had made up his mind to let his contract expire long before then.

The only crazy thing about the Jonas situation is not either giving him away for free in Jan or playing him consistently to the end

Highlights the problem of still not having an experienced DoF, or somebody that can competently cover that role. Penny-wise pound-foolish, Mr Evans!

Contract renewals don't required a DoF, just come common sense.

But it's symptomatic of the whole lack of foresight regarding on-pitch affairs from first team level down though, that's what a GOOD DoF with a proper vision should be doing and what we don't have at the moment. For my money, I'd take Burley or Royle into do that role - respected figures at ITFC and within the game who aren't suited to day-to-day team management any more but would add a level of strategic thinking and contacts that we no longer have.

This is the way lower league clubs generally operate. Unfortunately, we appointed a lower league manager who was naïve enough to think the same applies in a league where the players are valuable commodities.

Think you can probably blame Mick for not getting Jonas tied down. Not much seemed to get done on that front in his last year, looking back. By the time Hurst took charge Jonas had just come back from a World Cup so he - or his agent - may well have already been thinking about a future elsewhere by that stage.

It’s almost as if MM didn’t care beyond the end of that season as he knew he was going.

Agree. Jonas had basically said once Mick had gone he wanted to leave so no surprise.

He was a bit misrepresented on that. All he meant was that Mick going could impact on his Town career in that the next manager might not want him in his team, not that he would consider his future because of his departure.

Indeed, I think MM was aware it was going to be his last season from a long way out.

Well, again, we come back to Evans never putting in place a football structure. If he knew MM was off in January last year, and he had almost certainly decided by then or shortly afterwards, he should have protected the asset.

Did Knudsen want to play here once the window closed? Was it him saying he didn't want to or Lambert deciding it wasn't appropriate? Odd situation.

I think things ground to a bit of a halt on that front as the MM era was drawing to a close. Mick drove all the contract renewals, recommended to ME when to start discussions etc.

I don't get why a an ex-manager is seen as a DoF - the best ones like Webber up the road are those that have come through recruitment teams at clubs with more modern structures.

Mainly with regards to young players - ME has (had) a strict one year policy on set amounts dependent on age which were offered as take it or leave it for the young pros. £50 pw pay rise a year.

And now this year McGavin, Wright, Ndaba, Dobra, El Mizouni, Brown, Clements and maybe more have signed multi year deals
