Mings, Clarke, Webster, Rhodes and Marriott in the Premier League.

Which is why I don't want us to sell Dozzell this summer. I'm tired of watching players that were on our books at one time rip it up for other clubs.Patience is called for

I know not all the examples above equate to bad business (Mings especially), but for too long we've let players go before they've had a chance to establish themselves in our first team, and then watched them move for large fees in their next transfer. Sell-on clauses are fine but I'd rather we were the club getting the main money, not the next team down the line.

Although Marriott has been very in and out for Derby this season, his first full season in the Championship after 3 years playing at a lower level. He needed to move on and take a couple of steps backwards to move forward, I really doubt he'd have made it here. When he left he was behind Murphy, Didz, Sears and Pitman.

Clarke we had to let go to get Webster and I'd say we got a more than fair fee for Webster when we sold him, the failure to replace him was a problem though.

Good point. We let Richard Wright go while he was still undercooked and he could have been so much better.

Odd that you include mings and Webster but not waghorn. The others were all academy players. Players moving on to better things if you have bought them is a sign that you bought good players.

I'm not sure Wright had much more to prove at us (he had played well over 200 games) and it was too good an opportunity to turn down. It proved to be a disaster for him, but he had to give it a try.

Yes they were all Academy players, that was my point. We scouted them, coached and nurtured them for years and then another club benefitted. With Waghorn, we bought him for a bargain, got a decent season out of him and then sold him for a profit - same with Mings.

With the Academy players who moved on, we did all of the legwork and will have spent tens of thousands on coaches, medical treatment etc and then someone else benefits

Wickham, Cresswell.

The difference with those is that we got to at least enjoy seeing Cresswell and Wickham in a Town shirt - albeit for a short time. Watching Wickham dismantle the Derby defence at Pride Park in that 3-1 was a joy to see, and I imagine the people at Doncaster the night he smashed them had a similar experience.

Jordan Rhodes got minutes rather than hours on the pitch for us and then got sold. Most ITFC fans have never seen Marriott play for us, unless they watched the second string or youth teams

I was at Doncaster.

We got to see plenty of Mings, and would have seen more of Webster if injuries permitted.

Webster is linked to Clarke though. We had a very promising defender on our books but let him go in order to bring in another promising defender in return. Then we sold that promising defender as well, so ended up with neither. We'll get a sell-on for both but will it be as much as keeping one of them for three seasons and then selling him for a huge fee? Unlikely.

Contrast that with the budgies, who were facing financial strife last summer but wiped that out in a stroke by getting such a good return on Maddison.

Mings (£10k outlay in return for £8m) not the best example as I said in the first post.

But that's a rarity. Too often we've sold quickly and regretted at leisure

With Marriott there is a danger of revisionism. Not many people were up in arms when we sold him. But it's symptomatic of the Evans era. Would have been better for us to recognise there was a decent player there and with a bit of patience and some loan spells, we could be the ones benefitting in the long run. Instead he gets released and we get no benefit.

Evans might say we have to get players off the wage bill to free up transfer funds etc, but it's just bad business from someone who,in other areas of his life, is clearly very good at business. If you have a potential asset, don't let it go for free or peanuts and then watch someone else discover its true value.

Yep, that's just luck unfortunately.

Norwich didn't do anything differently with Maddison, very good player sold in a booming market.

To be fair to Evans I doubt it was his choice to get rid of these players, one of his positive aspects is he does seem to let the manager manage.

Why is Maddison a contrast? They sold him on just like we sold ours.

We'd already been loaning him out for 2 or 3 years and aside from an excellent first spell with Woking he didn't do much. It took him 3 years to get back up to this level, 3 years of having permanent homes rather than temporary loan moves. I honestly don't think he'd have made it had we kept him on for another year or two. He moved at the right time for him.

They waited until he had achieved his full value at Championship level then sold him. And they got to see him play,

While a Norwich player, he had two loan spells (Aberdeen and back at Coventry) which allowed him to develop as a player.

He didn't come through their academy though and they sold him after one good season. Bit like us with Mings.

Not really sure how that's different from us and Webster or Mings or Cresswell. It's economies of scale though and these are all defenders. If they'd been midfielders we'd have got significantly more.

But arguably we have been developing and improving the sellable value of our players over the past three or four years. That value was largely wasted last summer with the player turnover as the squad immediately became less valuable (even in the long-term). Lambert now needs to get that going again.

Evans business acumen. If we had bought Webster and kept Clarke where would we be now? But then super Mick would have coached the football out of them.

That's the difference between a club run by dedicated committed people who are there all the time and know about about the football world. And Marcus Evans.

As a midfielder who they originally paid 3 million for.

It's economies of scale given we have a much lower transfer kitty and he's a defender but what's the difference between us getting in Webster for say 500K and selling him for 4+ million?
