OK, I was in a similar position but, it being Cambridge, I just went to my usual contact at the agency and got a new contract on the Science Park. I was an accountant though, quite a transferable skill. If you work in scientific research you may have similar (or better) opportunities but could be difficult in pure academia. I think the skill set that administrative staff build up at Universities is really useful though, however some employers might not see that and would also be wary of what they perceive as a different working culture. They have no idea how bitchy University departments can be and how that equips the staff for surviving office politics and developing a thick skin that enables you to drive through objectives when necessary.

Fair play. Aye, tell me about it. I have more private sector experience than I do University experience so am probably immune to that, thankfully.

Working for a centralised University provider. Good pension in this sector and people tend to stay in the sector for good reason.

As it happens about three or four years ago I was in the back of a Land Rover in Kenya as a very belligerent local proceeded to pester a lioness so us tourists could get a closer look. Having been within about six feet of the creature and nothing more than some flimsy canvas (which didn't cover half of the space between us) for protection as she looked on extremely p1ssed off I can assure you that I have no intention of re-training as a lion tamer. I have, however, fed hyenas.

Well I did set myself up for that. In fact I sat down with one of the locals in Harar, Ethiopia who every night, by the light of pick up trucks, hold out meat on sticks for the hyenas who have been coming to scavenge on the corpses of cats, rats, dogs and anything else that the citizens of the city throw out from a few gates of the city as an actually quite clean waste disposal system. To the horror of my girlfriend and our driver I suddenly decided to join in and happily sat down with, and was accepted by, the hyena feeder for ten or so minutes. And from afar you wonder how on earth such ugly creatures propagate, but close up you see how gorgeous their pelts are and understand their attraction to each other. However the spell was broken when I felt something about six times as heavy as an Alsatian lean against my side and move round to the bit of meat on the end of my stick. Yep, a fully grown hyena had been behind me without my knowledge and the sudden realisation that these beasts are actually just a mass of muscle that leads up to a mouth full of razor sharp teeth hit me. I had just enough composure to gingerly get to my feet and back slowly away to the circle of onlookers...and two people asking what the feck I thought I was doing.

Bloody hell! That sounds mad. And you wonder why you do yourself mischiefs when rambling?! All this adventure stuff sounds great. Shame you've got to earn it to do it though
