Michael Owen getting a lot of stick today... 17:35 - Sep 3 with 4220 viewsMarshalls_Mullet

But what a player he was!!

Amazing goal scoring record, 23 goals in his debut season!

Ballon d'or winner!

Not sure we'll see another like him.

Shame he's not respected.

It's all his own fault that people think he's a d!ck though.

He was a very good player but to say that we won’t see another....get a grip

due to who he's played for and things he's said he, perhaps uniquely, is disliked by fans of every team he played for.

Comes across as a bit of a dullard who's more interested in horse racing.

Not sure he ever quite fulfilled his potential.

That goal vs Argentina in 98 remains one of my favourite football moments. Incredible that he was 18 at the time.

He was best in his teens, successive injuries took away the explosive pace he initially had

He was still a decent striker but essentially ended his career semi-retired for a few seasons, much like Jermaine Jenas, Darren Bent and Kieran Dyer etc

As people have said, he never quite fulfilled his potential, he was good but not quite the top echelon of players of his era imho

His stock has fallen a little with him being a particularly annoying co-commentator

Ballon D'or suggests he did reach his potential.

He just didn't maintain it.

He and Kevin Keegan are the only English players to win the Ballon D'or in the last half a century.

Suggests top echelon.

The Ballon D'or is an achievement for sure, however you wouldn't rate him him in the World Class bracket like a both Ronaldos, Messi, Ronaldinho, Zidane etc

He would have been in the next pack below with players like Rooney & Totti imho

That doesn't mean he didn't reach his potential.

World Class isn't restricted to those few players.

I would say Owen was world class at his peak.

Good but not world class.

Pace was his asset, as soon as he lost that he was very average. Also, decent defenders worked him out. He didn't have a great scoring record against top sides.

Although was just reading in the Standatd about the Clough/Revie TV debate in 74 just after Clough had left Leeds, I had completly forgotten about that. One of the best ever football related debates, there was bitterness, smugness, big headedness everywhere.

Doing a similar show with Owen and Shearer would be great.
