Postcards from the night shift(look at me). 06:33 - Oct 12 with 1705 viewsBlueBadger

It's been a busy night here, but I've had a real moment of 'yep, I did a good job there' tonight.
Had a cardiac arrest call around 3. By the time myself and the rest of the arrest team got there, the nurse making the call had made the emergency call(obvs), not only started CPR but administered a shock and got the individual in question back into a proper, stable cardiac rhythm to live to see another day. The patient in question is now on their way to A Specialist Hospital for ongoing treatment thanks to this nurse, who was a student of mine this time last year.

So, knackered as I am, I'm feeling a touch smug, right now.

Great stuff, must feel incredible to have that kind of impact on someone’s life, not to mention their family and friends.

It's thanks to people like you I'm still here, and probably annoying you, so am grateful on a daily basis.

It feels like it happened to someone else and was long ago now, but I'm very thankful for the chance to continue my life which is wholly down to medical professionals.

Good job, and you're entitled to feel very smug.

No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.

I'm claiming double smug points because the person doing all the saving was a student of mine last year.

Pah! Try doing a resus on a Friday evening, in a busy pub. Seriously though, well done. It is very emotional when we get someone back to carry on living a normal life.

That's not called smug. That's called being justifiably proud.

I am looking out of my window at the moment, across the glen, at a house where a few weeks ago a son had to do half an hour of CPR on his dad (breaking a few ribs in the process and being told to carry on despite the disconcerting noise) all the time with a phone wedged between his shoulder and ear getting the best of advice from the NHS.

Ordinarily I would say pride goes before a fall but in this instance don't worry about feeling smug (or even double smug) , it is because of people like you that knowledge about heart attack and stroke gets disseminated and lives that would otherwise stop short carry on.

As for the rest of us, we can do our bit by being aware of the possibility (remote as it may seem) of having to carry out CPR or at least ask someone else to. We can know where our nearest defibrillator is and how to use it (instructions are given on the equipment) as well as campaigning and contributing to make more defibrillators installed.

Well done btw.
