Phil Parkinson to be named new Sunderland manager then... on 20:46 - Oct 16 with 2963 views | Mullet | Given where he and the club are it seems the best choice. I'm not sure he will have them firing for a while, or even get them up this year but it gives them about as good a shot as they could hope for. He'll do some very simple things on and off the field which should level them out a bit I expect.

I think they need underwhelming though. They've got every hallmark of a fanbase and club who think they just have to turn up after shovelling money about. They've gone for the up and comer in Ross and can't afford a Fat Sam/Warnock/Mick type fixer. I think they'll be happy to get rid of the soft underbelly and the endless 1-1's. PP should be capable of that at least.

But they could've gone for a Paul Lambert type, i.e. with higher up Champ success like Adkins / Rowett / Hughton

I think they all turned them down. Seems Parky barely scraped the top ten candidates. So maybe the well is dry in terms of what they were/are offering? Don't get me wrong, I can't see him ripping it up, and hope he doesn't as they are a threat to us. But I also wonder if he stops the rot, as they did at certain points seem determined to bomb through the leagues.

That's what happens when you spend 4 mil on Will Griggs! I actually think Parkinson is a good appointment, but no not exciting

I thought it was exactly the sort of appointment they need after the last few years. A steady, tried and tested hand.

What an appropriate forum name for a club whose managerial appointments have most often seemed less than secure.

I agree, I think he will do well if they allow him to. But the trouble is, looking at their forum earlier today, their expectations were for a Roy Keane type ‘name’. They are not exactly noted for long term patience at that club either.

Those three would be holding out for championship jobs, and in Hughtons case possibly even premier league. Why on earth would they go to Sunderland, and be on a hiding to nothing...... Parkinson is a fairly understated appointment but has a good track record in the lower leagues - probably more what they need now, and for him it probably won’t impact his chances of picking up another lower league role afterwards either way.

Excluding caretakers, they are averaging a manager a year since McCarthy was booted out in 2006. Having seen their message board, it’s fair to say that most of the posters are underwhelmed with Parkinson.

A little controversial for you Phil. Jack Ross did a decent job from the Summer of 2018 when he completely rebuilt the side turning over 30 + Players in about 4 weeks. With that type of turnover he over performed. In truth the match turning abilities of Josh Maja kept the results ticking over until Christmas. With his sale and the flop signing of Will Grigg Sunderland lost their way stumbling through the season basically relying on Aidan McGeady and the pure poor quality of the opposition largely not taking their chances. With McGeadys injury's late in the season the game was largely up compounded by a penalty and injury time defeat in two defining Wembley showdowns. It was obvious what Sunderland required. Youth, Pace and Energy. None of this has been addressed in the Summer with very few bright prospects even making the bench from the Academy in cup games. Sunderland are trying to go for the quick fix and simply push their way back into the Championship. They may or may not achieve this by converting some 1-1's to wins. Longer term SAFC require major funding or a bottom up approach (similar to Ipswich) by only investing in youth and having a fruitful academy. Overall I think Ross was unlucky and probably would have made a decent Championship Manager. Unfortunately Sunderland have some strange thinking supporters and as other posters have highlighted have a misguided sense of entitlement that puts undue pressure into an already difficult environment.

I was being a little facetious regarding the turnover of managers there in recent seasons, albeit prior to Ross. I'm not sure Ross can be seen to have overperformed given the size of Sunderland in this division - their wage bill will be several times the size of most clubs at this level - and how weak we're discovering it is.
