The GoFundMe page got zero donations before it was taken down.
That's not the point.
The fact that the internet allows someone to be an absolute ar**hole with just a click is the point. The Internet was initially designed for Universities to exchange research to advance mankinds understanding. Ironically, it has ended up being a pit of disinformation that is bringing on a new dark age.

Don't believe a word I say. I'm only kidding. Or am I?

I think it was actually designed for military purposes

The internet evolved, it wasn't designed per se.

It was definitely military money that initially funded it.

There is a difference between the internet (infrastructure) and the WWW (collection and sharing of data).

One was developed by the military, one by research institutions.

Like any of the media, the internet can be used for great good or horrendous evil. It depends on the motives of the user.

It is also now used for disseminating good, crucial information that msm won't publish; bringing people together in harmony via sharing sporting events, music, literature, art, photography - or physical events hosting these; scientific knowledge; environmental & social awareness; technical knowledge; study; immediate photography of warzones, drought areas etc & how people are struggling to live in such places. Etc etc etc etc. People used to have to rely on going to the cinema once a week for a thousandth of such info that was often out of date by the time they saw it.

Best not to view things from one perspective only.

Wasn't it designed to allow the US military to have redundancy in case of a nuclear strike and to allow them the capability to retaliate thus assisting in the obliteration of our species? To be fair, I think it's doing a super job of that.

The Internet was actually initially designed for University types to exchange porn and then the military spotted it and investigated money into it

As an employee of the UK Education and research network I think I am qualified to answer here. The Internet in the US began as the miltary ARPANET a decentralised network of nodes that can communicate when any one or many parts is down. In the UK Universities and research institutes made inter connections over x.25 as indeed they did in the U.S. Then some of my senior colleagues joined both networks via under sea cable and connectivity. In 1990 Sir Tim sat at Cern and created the HTTP WWW protocol to allow easy linked document hosting and exchange, as the internet went from command line to GUI. Around this time IP internetworking rose in favour to become the dominant protocol, with its TCP/IP stack with windowing and application ports. Slowly large Tier 1 ISPs arose with global cabling allowing many private sector organisations to easily connect their organisations freely instead of having dedicated banking or office lines. Email became prevalent and home internet over modems rose. Then private companies and tech enthusiasts created huge amounts of content online as javascript and full stack web technologies created Sales portals and the first tech bubble. Following this web 2.0, early social media, Facebook and video. Then smartphones done well with Apple iOS and Android to deliver Apps and full internet to the masses. Now everything is connected, not only daily lives but cars, smart devices, fridges, payment devices, home monitoring and doorbells, Pets and heating systems, not always securely. And the President directly communicates with the people via unfiltered rants on Twitter.

Back in the day itfc.co.uk was one of the first football sites online and many TWTD folk were fully paid up techies from the local BT advanced neworrking division at Martlesham.
