James McClean/Poppies/Royal British Legion 18:07 - Nov 2 with 9261 viewsuefacup81

Given that Poppy Season (tm) is now well and truly upon us, and anything that moves must be emblazoned with as big a poppy as possible lest it be deemed unpatriotic, and guilty of "NoT supPOrrETinG aRE Lads", I'm sure it's not long until James McClean starts receiving his annual not-at-all-ironic abuse from certain sections of society for not doing what they demand he must do.

I was pondering earlier - surely the RBL should come out and perhaps just say something reinforcing the fact that whether or not to wear a poppy is a personal choice, and everyone's opinion is valid regardless?

Or would highlighting the fact that poppy-wearing is not mandatory severely damage their trade in poppy-branded sh*te?

I'm not sure it would make a blind bit of difference to the War Porn Commission and Walter Mitty's of this world.

Nor should they really be forced to arbitrate on his decision.

It really is a free country so he should be able to do what he wants. This bloke is so insignificant that it makes no difference to me what he thinks or does.

Fair point.

I just think it would be nice to see the RBL stand up and essentially say that the various folks who abuse James McClean, or anyone else who doesn't fit in with their view of 'remembrance' only serve to cheapen it.

It's a common blindspot with a lot of "patriots" though. They both love to remember things that never happened and bask in reflected (even stolen) glory, whilst talking down the country for allowing stuff like the McClean issue to happen.

The softcocks who abuse him with no self awareness aren't all that interested in what the Poppy actually means, it's what it means to them and their own egos.

The fact they're less than 1% and tarnish what should be a great source of community and reflection for the whole nation is the biggest shame.

Agree with everything there.

I don't think the 'broadening' of it all helps either. I seem to recall one club had their 'remembrance' match in mid-October last season because it was their closest home match to 11th November.

Surely having the whole thing as one or two discrete days (11th November and then the closest Sunday) would make it far more impactful.

We’ve done this half a dozen times at least.

I don’t wear a poppy. I give to the charity. I refuse to wear a poppy.

The Merchant Navy were treated shamefully by the RBL. The Merchant Navy who were called “The life line of Britain”

My grandfather was Merchant Navy in WWII. At his funeral, in full uniform, I was approached by some of his shipmates. I gave my newborn baby to my then wife, bought them all a beer, put money behind the bar so their glasses never went dry, sat down with them and had a chat.

Within minutes we were shipmates.

You see, the war effort was more than just shooting at Germans. The merchant men didn’t have anything to reply with when set upon by the German Navy.

Have a bit more respect for those of us who choose not to wear a poppy, we are most likely more informed than you are.

He has his reasons. Whether anyone accepts that or not, he is free to to chose to wear or not wear a poppy.

It's interesting to note that that the whole 'you MUST wear a poppy' thing has gotten more and more prevalent the further away we get from both world wars and the fewer veterans are left alive and capable of telling their stories.
These days there's an element of people who seem to think it means 'sport are troups' rather than the rather more nuanced 'remember why they died and use that knowledge to do your best to prevent it happening again' that it was when I was younger.

When I were a lad only the televised ITV match on Remembrance Sunday held a minute’s silence. Now every team holds one at their own ground annually.

Also I remember a campaign around 1996 to hold a two minute’s silence on Armistice Day along with Remembrance Sunday. That might have started it along with our involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan with the casualties that followed. It certainly brought home to many the sacrifices made over the years.

In my opinion, wearing a poppy, or not, is a personal choice. It is not, necessarily, reflective on anyone's attitude or support / non-support, for the armed forces as everyone will have their own private views on the subject.

The commercialisation of the poppy does gall me somewhat as it is not now the case that all proceeds go to related causes, with a portion seemingly lining the pockets of unrelated individuals.

There are those that go above and beyond expectation every day; firefighters, police officers, doctors / nurses and so on, who deserve equal recognition and charitable support.

As has been said above, there are those that make charitable contributions altruistically and without banging drums. I personally feel this is the right approach.

As with all such things, those decisions remain with the individual and no third party / person has any right to be judgemental or point fingers.

If you can say, hand on heart, that every single piece of merchandise on sale here is worthwhile, and contributes to the solemnity and sincerity of remembrance, then I shall happily accept your assertion.

However, I remain to be convinced that a poppy-emblazoned dog bed or cupcake cases necessarily achieve that aim.

What's the bigger picture that's helped by Fido being able to lay down to sleep in a huge plush poppy, safe in the knowledge that millions died in the trenches of France and Belgium in order to protect his right to walkies and bonio?

Or is the bigger picture merely that they enable the Arms Race Of Remembrance by allowing people to declare themselves to be remembering better than everyone else as they drink their tea out of a poppy-emblazoned mug, as their dog brings them their poppy slippers whilst wearing its poppy collar and tag?

It’s just a different way of giving to the charity.

It’s no different to me buying my boy ITFC bedding and curtains. Just a different revenue stream.

Each to their own. I can’t see how you’re suggesting that people should be able to choose to not wear a poppy, then say that there’s too much “poppy branded sh!te”.

What happened to your “people can choose” stance.

If you don’t like it, don’t buy it. Simple.
