It basically boils down to the fact it's difficult to prove a falsehood in these cases because when presented with evidence the person will just say that evidence is also part of the conspiracy.
I think the fact that social media is able to amplify the exposure to theories coupled with a fact some people will automatically believe something that reaffirms their views it's bordering on an illness for some people now.

The same people claim events like Sandy Hook are a hoax too.
A judge in the USA said to Alex Jones, it was down to him to prove his story, not simply disparage the ‘truth’ around Sandy Hook. First time legally I think conspiracy theorists were told to prove their theory, not disprove other people.
