Danny Hegan walks into that midfield - but if you're not personally able to confirm that, then the great Derek Dougan, in his book, mentions his team-mate Danny as the most naturally gifted player he ever saw.

I'd have O'Callaghan in the starting line up, probably in place of Garvan.

He'd have had a decent shout to start in goal too, if only he hadn't suffered that horrendous arm break.

I never saw Hegan play but would be happy to be guided by anyone who did

Yep, Danny Hegan was good, my favourite player at the time.

Keno, he was a superb player, my favourite when I was a lad. Easily better than Garvan

My favourite Pat Sharkey story concerns his one and only appearance for Northern Ireland in the Home Internationals at Hampden Park.

After the game, Pat got the train straight back to Ipswich and at 2am was spotted on the dance floor of the First Floor Club making shapes, still wearing his Northern Ireland shirt from the game earlier in the afternoon.

I thought Pat Sharkey was going to be really really special for us and I kept telling anyone that would listen that he was going to be great. My mate still reminds me of that from time to time 40 odd years later.
He is just about the only ITFC player that I can recall thinking they would be very good and they never lived up to it.

He did look very good in a 3-0 win over Man U in 1976 I remember though.

I'm too young to remember him as a player but I think he had potential but don't think he was dedicated enough. That's the impression I've got from other players talking about him and having met him a couple of times.

Don't wish to stir a hornets nest, but have we united Ireland for the purpose of this XI?

Neither O'Callaghan or Garvan played for the Irish senior team. Garven played underage internationals all he way up to U21, he was on one senior squad. George who was a better player in my view never played any internationals for Ireland. Gifted player but had non sport related problems.

Chambo qualifies for Ireland if you're looking to switch to a back four. Shane O'Connor as a left-back, of course as well.

That's a point. Can we include Mick and Roy in the squad? That'd certainly improve it.

No mentions for the first manager of the professional era Mick O'Brien either, won caps for both Ireland and Irish Free State.

Given that Jack Charlton was Ireland manager, can see no reason why that position has be an Irishman.

Sir Bobby would surely be a better bet than McM, Keano or your bloke.

When Ireland was “divided” the head of the Irish rugby union, who was an Ulster man was asked if they would split the rugby team

His reply was “no cos that would be stupid”

Wrong O'Callaghan

Kevin is your man.

He played 21 times for the Republic and almost played in goal in an unofficial international game but suffered a nasty broken arm that prevented him from doing so, his place being taken by a rookie american.

I hadn’t realised that about Chambers

I do think big Al and magic on the same team would be interesting, I can imagine a good use of “industrial language”
