Can you see companies moving to smaller premises after this is all over and having more people work from home. I had to ring an insurance company to sort something for my daughter and the person I spoke to was working from home as were his colleagues yet they sorted my query between them in no time . Has anyone found it easy or has it been a nightmare?

I can defo see that. All the points of resistance against working from home will all have been knocked down by this, companies can see that it works and as such they can cut costs by having smaller premises and more people working frmo home more of the time.

Totally agree, I think this will massively accelerate a move towards working from home for people in a lot of industries. Companies will see how well it works and how much they can save on overheads and it’s basically a no-brainer.
Personally as a small business owner working from home I’ve used this “down time” to research and explore growing the business. There will be some company directors sitting on their bums binge watching Netflix furloughing their staff and blaming the virus when they go bust. Business need to look to be coming back bigger stronger and together. House is home work is work.

I read a story a couple of days ago about barclays wonderring whether they really need their 7000 person tower in canary wharf anymore.
Commercial property owners must be set for an absolute calamity. What will happen to all the empty buildings? What with environmental issues around commuting, isnt a fair bet that any changes on work patterns might be permanent?
Has anyone ever looked at their own postings for last day or so? Oh my... so sorry. Was Ullaa
I certainly don't fancy going back to a large open plan office space where any bugs get spread by the aircon. Working from home has been reasonably successful with few technical issues so I see no reason to rush back to the office following return from lockdown. I do miss the social contact and banter but that's about it.

Commercial Property Owners? That’s very nice of you to not call them by their real title which is “Workshy Exploitive Leeches” I will say :)

Out of interest, is the fella who owns the building that I work in, a fella who funds an extremely progressive left wing non-profit considered by many on the right to be a bit of a liberal bogey man an exploitative leech, or is it not so black and white as that?
Anyway, we are closed until June as things stand, and work goes on as normal, so why pay in excess of $500k per month on midtown Manhattan office space in the future? Just give me a $250k pay rise instead and we will both be happy.

"Imagine being a heterosexual white male in Britain at this moment. How bad is that. Everything you say is racist, everything you say is homophobic. The Woke community have really f****d this country."
We will be reducing footprint, absolutely. We’ve proven we can wfh en masse so why accrue the cost.
I miss the office though. Half and half is my preference. And I’ve fcked my neck and back by spending the entire day on zoom and teams. Usually I just walk the floors and go and see people if I want to get something done.

On the plus side it's much easier to crack one off at home than at work.

Not a great look on zoom.
Can I get a meeting ID and password? Asking for a friend...

Screw that, when it’s safe to do so I personally want to get the hell out of my flat and back to the office. Whilst I am for flexibility for those who want, especially considering childcare commitment etc cities are the lifeblood of our economies and people working there create millions of jobs. Also the social scene and opportunities for young professionals is why people want to move to certain markets in the first place. Not to mention the inability to train people and communicate, it’s just not the same. Ever been to square mile or lower Manhattan on the weekend? This shouldn’t be a permanent vision of the future.

I don't like the intrusion of work at home and was expected to work in a city centre office way beyond what was acceptable to most private and public sector workplaces in March. I don't see myself sitting around an open plan office with my team again until there is an effective vaccine - this is probably the reality for public transport, airports, normal shopping, pub, sport etc for about a year probably - don't worry though time ain't nothing.

They’ve actually already leased floors of that building to government departments.
I think this will accelerate working at home and alternative working practices. I loved it tbh and for a good period of time did a min of a day a week at home. But my job and the set up allowed that. A chum of mine has a flat and it’s totally unsuitable for home working. Another mate is loving it.
It depends on the nature of the work, but in my lifetime the world of work changed enormously in so many ways. I think this pandemic will just accelerate that and I believe that’s a good thing. For example, I needed a Building Inspector to view some work done to the house today. The meeting was done using Facetime as he was working at home and it looks like the only physical inspection will be done at the end. Why not if the tech allows it?

It will cost millions of jobs in heavily populated metro areas. You’re supposed to interact with people face to face other than you’re loved ones you know. It’s not healthy routine for many working from home every day.

Nobody is saying it should be mandatory though. Plenty of jobs don't need the people contact that you're concerned about. Many do, but it seems like a win-win situation if people have the choice of working from home for some of the time, allowing organisations to downsize their work spaces and commute based carbon emissions to fall.

Yes fine but there seems to be a notion from slightly older generations that the entire world wants to work from home. This is not true.

I am having to communicate by teleconference, Facetime etc and it's kinda working coz we are in a crisis, but the personal reading of human interaction and empathy you get from proper human physical contact is lacking, so the shysters can have a field day - be wary.

I feel so “zoomed” out by Friday PM it’s weirdly exhausting.

I’m with you on this generally, but businesses are going to be after reduced office space, with more flexible working.
Again fine and there will be some stuff come out of this but anyone under 35 is apparently an annoying millennial these days and look everyone wants to work from home now, it’s proven we can do it. Hmmm
My social group, is very much looking forward to getting back to the office for a lot of reasons.
Cities are meant for work and play and long may than continue! The security guard, cleaner, lobby receptionist, guy serving coffee across the street and happy hour joint all probably agree with me as well.

Again, I’m with you. All of our youngsters want to be back in the office. We are in shoreditch and had a big annual social event in the calendar for tonight.
